1) Autonomous vehicles require connectivity to other vehicles and smart infrastructure to safely navigate roads, generating large amounts of data from sensors like radar, cameras, LIDAR and sonar. 2) Major investments are being made in connected vehicle and smart transportation technologies, but the technology for true autonomous vehicles is still being developed, and issues around computing infrastructure and connectivity need to be addressed. 3) Researchers are working on fog computing architectures and container-based virtualization to help autonomous vehicles process and communicate sensor data and connect to cloud services in a decentralized manner.
