This presentation addresses leadership skills and what to expect in the decade (2011-2020) ahead. The belief is that small businesses will collaborate and network to earn the right of passage. We provide a few tips about delivering a leadership presentation and how to do business networking effectively.

  2. 2. Committee -or- board?<br />Collaboration is good, but it can be difficult to get everyone on the same page. This presentation reviews the structure of a committee and a Board of Directors.<br />Many CEOs serve as a Chairman in a committee or a board. This role requires a special set of skills to accept direction yet to work independently in assigning the tasks set forth.<br />

Chairperson’s role<br />Provides Leadership to the Board<br />Encourages a Map for Strategic Planning<br />Appoints Committee Members<br />Discusses Issues Confronting the Organization<br />Monitors Financial Plans and Reports<br />Formulates Performance Evaluations for the CEO and the organization<br />

Vice Chairperson’s role<br />The Vice Chairperson is a successor to a Chairperson on a Board of Directors<br />Committee members report to the VP regarding logistics of a task force and recommendations.<br />The VP works closely with the CEO to assign members for a task force and responsibilities for employees who supervise projects.<br />Both the VP and CEO evaluate annual goals set forth.<br />

Secretary & treasurer<br />The Secretary records board meetings and distributes these minutes.<br />The Treasurer manages finances of an organization with annual budgets that need to have Board approval.<br />Financial policies and management procedures are outlined and that is executed by the CEO to employees of an organization.<br />

Conflicts of interest<br />What if an active board member is affiliated with another organization that represents a conflict of interest?<br />Loyalty is the main obligation of a board member. It is advised to avoid having spouses or family members serving because there may be other duties for that person.<br />One way to prevent a conflict is through a mission statement for the board.<br />

Presentation summary<br />Board members are elected by chapters or related groups that are affected by the organization.<br />Board members have roles identified that impacts policies and procedures for the organization<br />A conflict of interest may arise. If loyalty is in question, it may be time for board members to elect a new member for the board.<br />Have a mission statement that drives the culture of an organization.<br />
