1. REPORT ON CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AT PARAPLEGIA HOSPITAL
We Student of S.Y. M.Sc. Nursing of Community Health Nursing Specialty got
opportunity to have clinical experience of paraplegia hospital and spine
institution centre civil hospital campus, Ahmadabad, for 1 week(17/7/2017 to
22/7/2017).
2. GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
At the end of clinical experience at paraplegia unit students will be able to
develop expertise and in depth understanding about rehabilitation. Activities at
the paraplegia unit and the role of nurse for paraplegia patients in the paraplegia
unit.

4. Assessment:
As per syllabus activity part, we have to take experience of occupational
health center.
Planning:
We discussed about objectives of the experience of occupational health
center, civil hospital, Ahmadabad with our H. O. D. of Community Health
Nursing-II. She gave authorized letter for experience permission.
Implementation:
We S.Y.M.Sc.Nursing students of Community Speciality II got
appointment for posting at occupational health centre. My posting started from
14/11/16 to 19/11 /2016 daily between 9am to 4pm.
On 14/11/ 2016 I reached there at 9:00A.M. First of all I met Mrs P.D.Bhabhor
Matron at there. Ms Sapana, H.R. Manager oriented us to Government Spine
Institute and its different department.
During these days I have visited all the department of GSI and attended
the various activities of the GSI, along with attending the patient admitted in
wards.

Objective/Purpose:
To provide hospital facilities for the benefit and health care & rehabilitation of
the general public.
Mission/Vision Statement:
To get proper and timely treatment and rehabilitative management to general
public and particularly for the disabled and paraplegia patients.

6. FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT INSTITUTE
Indoor beds 60 indoor beds available
Patients with paralysis of both lower limbs due to Spinal cord injury
caused by fall, fall of heavy objects; vehicular accidents are admitted for
rehabilitative management.
Wards Three wards – 2 male & 1 female
Out-patients Department (O.P.D.)
Out-patients services are available twice in a week on Tuesday &
Thursday afternoon 2.30 – 3.30 PM for paraplegia and other disabled
patients.
X-ray/Laboratory Services
X-ray & laboratory investigation facilities available for services indoors
and out-door patients.
Operation Theatre
Well equipped operation theatre with modern medical
instruments/equipments for spinal surgery and other orthopaedic
7. procedure for indoor patients free of charge, by qualified and
experienced orthopaedic surgeons.
Physiotherapy
Rehabilitative management, for indoor and out-door patients, a well
equipped Physiotherapy Department with modern equipments and
exercise and electrotherapy treatment is given by trained and qualified
physiotherapists.
8. Occupational therapy:
Occupational therapists treats indoor patients by different therapeutic
activities like - morning out-door sports, co-ordination exercises, A.D.L.
training, functional aid training, pre-vocational training, indoor games
etc. Out-door patients are also evaluated and treated.
Prosthetic & Orthotic Workshop
Prosthetic & Orthotic Workshop provides prosthetic and orthotic
appliances to the indoor and outdoor patients as per the advice of
Orthopaedic Surgeons with the price prescribed by the Government
which is very low compared to market price. The Workshop is equipped
with modern instrument and equipments.
9. Department of Public Relation & Medical
Department gives proper guidance and information to the public and
patients for the treatment other facilities Social Services available. During
treatment they help the patients by making provision for necessary
medicines, different orthosis with the help of voluntary agencies. To
encourage the patients and relatives and to make the patients independent
by self-employment and also arrange for vocational aids through various
N.G.Os. Also helping for organization of various celebrations with active
participation of patients and N.G.Os.
Safari Programme
After the discharge of the patients, they need proper Care at their home.
Many patients after discharge complain bedsore, urinary track problems
and other social problems etc. Most of these patients are very poor, they
cannot come for follow up. Hence we have started a Paraplegia Safari
Programme to reach the doorstep of the patients to give proper treatment
and guidance.
10. Psychomotor Laboratory (Arthroscopy Training):
The Centre of Healing Arts – Dr. Dinesh G. Patel Psychomotor
Laboratory the first of its kind in India and the Asian Continent was
started at the Paraplegia Hospital, Ahmadabad in December 2001 with 6
workstations and instruments on donation from Smith & Nephew,USA
costing $2,30,132.50 (Rs.1.72 crores).
The Laboratory consists of a full operation theatre set up with all required
arthroscopy instruments and accessories along with joint models to learn
and do a mock surgery on the model.
This set up would enable the students to learn the basic diagnostic
techniques and kick start the basic operative techniques and transfer the
same to an actual orthopaedic surgical theatre on a patient.
They have organised many hands on workshop with live surgical
demonstration to upcoming orthopaedic surgeons and post-graduate
students from all over India.
They are conducting training programme in the Psychomotor Laboratory
regularly for the post-graduate students and Orthopaedic surgeons all
over India. Those doctors interested in training in the Laboratory, can
directly contact the Director of this hospital for fixing the training
programme.
11. A Leg to Stand On Ahmadabad Project:
The Government of Gujarat and A Leg To Stand On, New York started a
Leg To Stand On Project at the Paraplegia Hospital in February 2003,
jointly. A Leg to Stand On’s mission is to help transform the lives of
children with limb disabilities in Gujarat-India by offering them to
physical capabilities to access the opportunities earned through education,
work and mobility.
A leg or arm handicap can limit a child’s ability to escape from danger,
prevent a child from getting an education, disqualify a youth from
working and prohibits a child’s ability to play sports.
The objectives of A Leg To Stand On project is to prepare the level
playing field for handicapped children in Gujarat-India by efficiently
channelling global resources to help correct leg and arm disabilities and
to improve local medical education and knowledge through the teaching
and skill and knowledge transfer of specialized rehabilitative surgical
procedures.
Under this project, children below the age group of 18 years are given
good quality prosthesis and orthosis free of cost. A Leg to Stand On,
Ahmadabad has registered as many as 200 children and provided 165 free
good quality prosthesis and orthosis to 154 children.
12. Prosthetic & Orthotic College:
From 2005-2006 academic years, Paraplegia Hospital has started
Prosthetic & Orthotic College. It is affiliated with Gujarat University.
Yearly intake of student is 10. Eligibility for admission is 12th Science
stream pass. Duration of course: 4-1/2 years including 6 months
internship. The Centralized Admission Committee along with MBBS,
Dental courses, does admission to this course.

14. CONCLUSION:--
During my experience/visit in paraplegia hospital, I gain more
knowledge of exercise as well as problems of paraplegia patients. It provides
valuable knowledge and helps me in my future during caring the patient of
spinal Trauma in various settings. All the authority, Nursing staffs and other
hospital staffs are very cooperative and they provide information and help me
during my clinical experience. I am very much thankful to Mrs. REETA
PATEL, H.O.D. of Community Health Nursing-II, for arranging such kind of
experience for enhancement of knowledge and skills.
