2. This presentation deals with the topic Scope of
pharmacy, this topic is part of paper IV of M.D
Rasashastra and Bhaishajya kalpana final year.

3. The American Pharmacists Association say
Pharmacy is the profession responsible for the
appropriate use of medications, devices and
services to achieve optimal therapeutic
outcomes.

4. Introduction
•Charaka samhita the ancient text of ayurveda tells,
person can escape the blow of lord Indra’s Vajra but a
medicine prescribed by foolish Vaidhya certainly leads to
death of person.
•Many such examples showing the importance of having
proper knowledge of medicine and its use according to
disease can be found in ayurveda literature.

5. •Pharmacy is the art and science of preparing and
dispensing medicines.
•With rapid advancement in technology this art has been
transformed from small pharmacies to large scale
pharmaceutical industry.
•Dispensing of medicines has increasingly become more
centralised and automated, with many of the tasks
formerly performed by pharmacists are now being done
using pharmaceutical technology.

6. Role of Pharmacists in today’s
era
•Injudicious use of drugs especially Anti-microbial drugs is a
matter of concern as the rate of Adverse drug reactions is
increasing at alarming rate.
•It has been estimated that more than 2 million hospitalized
patients per year experience an adverse drug reaction, two
third of which were the cause of hospital admission and
more than 100000 of which are fatal.
•It is now recognised that medication use is complex and
problem prone process, in which errors that result in injury
to patients can happen at each step.

Pharmacy practise therefore involves the review and
interpretation of prescription orders, the
compounding, labelling, and dispensing of drugs and
devices, drug product selection and medication use
evaluation; patient monitoring and intervention, and
provision of information related to use of
medications and non-pharmacological modalities.

8. Scope of pharmacy
•Life style changes are increasing the incidence of
diseases such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, low back
ache, cardiac disorders. So certainly the role of
pharmacists in tackling these diseases will be crucial and
will play vital role in providing health benefits along
with other section of medical field.
•Also with introduction of genomics will result in
discovery of more drugs for prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment of disease.

•It is defined broadly to include all of those
establishments whose function, in varying degrees, is to
serve society’s need for both drug products an
pharmaceutical services.
•They range from the corporately owned chain
pharmacy (like Apollo pharmacy), to the pharmacy
department of supermarket, to the independently owned
pharmacy.
•It is direct patient relationship as people seek
information regarding their disease and for better
options of treatment.

11. Health systems pharmacy
•Practise of pharmacy in private and government owned
hospitals, health maintenance organisation, clinics,
walk-in-health centres, and nursing homes.
•Hospital pharmacy practise involves working
extensively with other members of the health care team,
including physicians, nurses, and other health
professionals and workers.

12. Nuclear pharmacy
•Nuclear pharmacy applies the principles and
practices of pharmacy and nuclear chemistry to
produce radioactive drugs used for diagnosis and
therapy.
•Also referred to as radiopharmacy, is the specialty
practise of pharmacy that focuses on the safe and
efficacious use of radioactive drugs.
•Radioactive drugs referred to as
Radiopharmaceuticals, constitute a special class
of drugs according to FD&C.

13. Industrial pharmacy
•This field provides opportunities to pharmacists of all
education levels. This includes
Sales representatives or medical representatives.
Marketing and legal departments
Professional communications managers
Clinical research scientists
R&D personnel
Production and Quality control supervisory positions.

14. Government service
•Pharmacists can also work in government organisations
like military services.
•Govt. also provides vacancies under various
programmes both on permanent and temporary basis in
National programmes, National Health Mission,
R.B.S.K (Rastriya Bala Suraksha Karyakrama).

15. Pharmaceutical education
•Pharmaceutical education offers opportunities to
pharmacists with advanced degrees in any of the
professional specialties.
•It provides higher salaries, more freedom of work.
