The target audience for folk rock music includes males and females aged 13-23. Males make up half the audience and tend to be older at 17-23, while females are younger at 13-23. Both genders can relate to common folk rock themes like love, friendship, nature, and aggression. Ideal consumers of folk rock music videos would include an indie-styled male who prefers vinyl and independent films, and a similar female who is more conscious of trends but uses music for relaxation and cares deeply about the lyrics.
1. Target Audience
The generalised audience for the Folk Rock genre is comprised of an even spread of males and
females. Rock as a genre is stereotypically associated with males, whereas the folk genre is
stereotypically associated with females, this genre creates the perfect mix of genders. The male
audience are aged 17-23, whereas the female audience tends to be younger, with a range of
13-23 years old. These age ranges are representative of listening habits, emotions and mindsets
of the general population.
Due to the nature of the genre, certain themes reoccur such as love, friendship, relationships,
nature and sometimes aggression towards a particular event/movement. These themes allow
the genre to be loved by both males and females, who are able to pick up and relate to the
themes displayed within them. For example, Males with ‘brotherhood’ and ‘aggression’ and
females with ‘love’ and ‘relationships’.
Target audience psychographic
The drawings above are artistic impressions of what a ideal consumers of my music video will
look like. There is a male and female drawing because of the even spread between males and
females in the audience.
The Male Impression:
He might listen to current folk rock bands such as Mumford and Sons, Bears Den, Two Door
Cinema Club and The Strokes. He would dress in clothes that resemble the indie genre, such as
Flannel shirts, skinny jeans, colourful socks, a white t-shirt. I don't think he is particularly brand
aware, if the clothes are comfy then he'll wear it , he is not conscious of ‘cool and stylish’ brands
and logos to wear. He would rather listen to music on a vinyl rather than digitally on Spotify/
Itunes or on a CD, for the more traditional, pure sound it gives. He is an avid festival-goer, and
listens to music on a regular basis. He probably plays an instrument in a band similar to the
genre. In terms of motion picture and film, he prefers to avoid blockbuster films, and instead
loves smaller, independent films or documentaries surrounding current affairs. Overall he is an
intelligent and sociable person, who sways away from normal trends, and instead seeks to create
his own style.
The Female Impression:
She is very similar to the Male impression, however she sympathises more with the lyrics used in
the songs. she is more hesitant to generate her own styles because she cares more about what
other people think. She is conscious of popular trends and styles, yet, does not follow them as
she likes to be different from the masses. She uses music as more of a stress buster/relaxation
tool. Again, her life probably revolve around music, she attends festivals, concerts, gigs, and
may/may not be in a band, but she is able to play an instrument like acoustic guitar or she can
sing. Because she listens to music on a daily basis, during her everyday tasks, she will listen via a
digital device like an mp3 player or on Spotify. In terms of films, she prefers blockbuster
romantic comedies, but also enjoys watching documentaries/films about current affairs. Overall
she is Intelligent, caring and sociable but enjoys ‘zoning out’ with music.
