17/01/10 The world-class companies we visited had stated that 5S was their foundation for continuous improvement. So we began with getting our house in order by undertaking an aggressive “5S,” or housekeeping, campaign. 5S begins with having what you need where you need it. This chart shows the Japanese words and their literal translation into English. The far right column shows how Boeing uses “S” words in its translation.
17/01/10 The Japanese word “kaizen” means “improvement never ends,” or “continuous improvement,” especially small, incremental improvement. It is a philosophy that hold in their personal life and in the workplace. Within BCAG, the formal structure for continuous, incremental improvement is the Accelerated Improvement Workshop. As in pruning a Bonsai tree, AIWs make small, incremental improvements. The AIWs clip a little here and there to create improvements until the whole enterprise is lean.
17/01/10 The Standard Operations improvement cycle begins with a clear target. What do you want to gain? Do you want to meet an increased takt time, or free some number of workers for other work? With that objective in mind, you observe and document the current, as-is process. (Note: You may not want to get this specific, but if you do, continue with the following) To do this, we use: Standard Work Sheet. This shows the physical area layout and flow of a product through a series of process steps. It shows both part and people flow. People sometimes call this a “spaghetti chart” because when a bad process is documented, the lines look like tangled mounds of spaghetti. Time Observation Sheet. A time collection device used to document the component tasks (operations) and their process times for one production cycle. Percent Loading Chart (bar chart). Shows the relationship between work loads of multiple people involved in a common production cycle. Uses the data from the time observation sheet. Standard Work Combination Chart. Detailed description of what an individual does and the time it takes them to perform one production cycle. The process is as follows: Identify problems. Look for places where people, parts, machines are idle or under-used. Resolve problems. Prevent recurrence. This is where you apply the tools of lean manufacturing (small lot size, total production maintenance, setup reduction, continuous flow, visual controls, pull system, 5S, etc.) Document this new process and use it as basis for a new improvement cycle.
