4. Smartphone’s impact on productivity. Most of the staff at most work places own a Smartphone. It is a temptation to them. Plus-minus 50% of the staff in most workplaces are guilty.
6. The Smartphone’s impact on communication in the workplace. Smartphones have been a great help regarding long distance communications in the workplaces. On the other hand it has caused some troubles. People in the workplaces are becoming more detached and impersonal.
7. How smartphones affect social engagement and education. Facebook+twitter =socialengagement? Smartphones are a distraction for those who are trying to obtain an education. Information overload.
A lot of the staff in work places are aged between 24 and 34 and this is the age group that mostly owns Smart phones. As the graph illustrates, most people use their smartphones to send or receive text messages(which are rarely business related). Having a Smartphone on their person also tempts them to go onto social networking sites like facebook and twitter to chat to their friends (+/- 50% of the staff in most businesses are guilty of this).
Since quite a number of the staff go onto the internet and chatrooms for non-work related purposes, during working hours, this negatively affects the business. This negatively affects productivity due to the decreased performance of the staff. This leads to decreased productivity and ultimately decreased profits for the business.
Smartphones have really been helpful in the big businesses which have several branches in different places. The different branches can communicate over the phone or by electronic mail using smartphones. The do not have to be there in person. This saves the business a lot of time and travelling costs. On the other hand it has caused people to be detached and impersonal to the extent that some people will send their college a e-mail while sitting right across them. This creates a tense or uneasy atmosphere to work in.
Smartphones are excellent when it comes to instant messaging, e-mails and chatting on chatrooms like facebook and twitter. A lot of people think that that’s a good way of engaging socially. This is very wrong indeed because you just chat for the sake of keeping yourself busy and it is usually with a complete stranger. This can be dangerous at time if that “friend” or “follower” can get some of you personal information. This also lessens the value of a true friendship and the benefits thereof. Smartphones have all the exciting and attractive applications to distract a learner from their studies to spend most of their time on the Smartphone. Smartphones could result in information overload. This is when someone becomes anxious when they cannot use a phone or the internet. This can turn out to be a really big problem if not treated.
