3. Metaphor
• Comparison of two things where you say that one thing IS
another. Where a metaphor asserts the two objects in the
comparison are identical on the point of comparison, a
simile merely asserts a similarity.
– She is a gem.
– All the world’s a stage.
– He showered her with gifts. Giving is dropping from
above.
– The event was clouded over by protests. Protests are an
intrusion of light.
– My memory is a little foggy. Memory is a visible object.
