- SURF is an organization in the Netherlands that works to improve ICT infrastructure for higher education and research.
- SURF is working on projects to develop "enhanced publications" which combine traditional publications like text with additional materials like data, maps, images and annotations.
- Several projects have been funded to create enhanced publications in fields like archaeology and psychology. Challenges include presentation, identification, long-term preservation and developing tools and infrastructure to support enhanced publications.
- Moving forward, SURF will work on developing repository infrastructure to store and share enhanced publications, creating guidelines and incentivizing their creation through things like legal reports and reward systems.

The document discusses swelling soils in Colorado, including their geology, effects on construction and landscaping, and how to inspect for issues related to swelling soils. Some key points are:
- Clay-rich soils and bedrock in Colorado can absorb water and swell, potentially damaging structures.
- Special construction methods like deep foundations or subsurface drainage systems are needed to mitigate the effects of swelling soils.
- Landscaping should aim to reduce excess water near foundations through choices like plant selection and irrigation practices.
- Inspections of homes in swelling soil areas should evaluate the soil report, design/construction methods used, and any existing damage.
Burj Dubai is currently the world's tallest building at 818 meters tall. Construction began in 2004 and set records along the way, such as the highest vertical concrete pumping of 500 meters in 2007. It broke the previous record of the tallest building with its 160 floors. New technological solutions were required to build the tower, which is expected to be completed despite potential delays from the economic crisis.
The document is about the MixiKit plugin for CakePHP, which allows accessing data from the Mixi Graph API. It introduces the speaker Takashi Nojima and his company ELASTIC Consultants Inc. The MixiKit plugin uses the Mixi Graph API for data, implements OAuth login with Mixi to get an access token, and saves the token to the database. A demo of the plugin is shown. The document also mentions a similar TwitterKit plugin.
The document provides an overview of the home inspection methodology and standards used by Tom Yeager, a certified home inspector. It discusses the types of inspections conducted, including for buyers and sellers. It outlines the inspection process from initial contact to the delivery of the report. Standards followed are based on NACHI guidelines. Environmental issues that may be encountered like radon, mold, lead paint, and asbestos are also summarized along with guidance on further testing.
Excel is spreadsheet software that allows users to create tables to organize and analyze data. It automatically calculates totals and values and can print tables and create graphs to visualize data. Excel uses a grid of individual cells organized in rows and columns to input and display data. Users can format text, insert tables, and add graphs and mathematical functions using various buttons to manipulate and present information in Excel spreadsheets.
Karl Marx was the founder of communism. He believed that history is defined by class struggle between the wealthy owners and the poor workers. Marx argued that capitalism would inevitably be replaced by socialism, and eventually communism, with a classless society without private property. Communism took hold in Russia after the 1917 revolution led by Lenin and the Bolsheviks. Under Stalin's totalitarian rule in the Soviet Union, the government seized control of industry, agriculture, and other sectors and suppressed political dissent.
The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 imposed punitive terms on Germany following World War 1. It required Germany to admit guilt for starting the war, pay extensive reparations, demilitarize the Rhineland region, and lose territory. The treaty caused anger in Germany and controversy abroad. It established the League of Nations but the US refused to join. The treaty redrew borders in Europe and the Middle East, laying the groundwork for future conflicts.
Nationalism in Europe led to a tangled web of alliances between countries by 1900. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in 1914 led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, pulling other allied countries into what became World War 1. The war resulted in stalemate as new military technologies like machine guns, tanks, airplanes, and poison gas led to trench warfare on the Western Front with millions of casualties. The entry of the United States into the war in 1917 helped ensure the defeat of the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1918.
1) Ushahidi began in Kenya to crowdsource reports of post-election violence via SMS and map them on Google Maps. It has evolved into a free and open source platform.
2) The document discusses theories around how social media can both enable and hinder democracy by leveling power between information producers and consumers or "prosumers".
3) It presents a case study of Ushahidi being used in Afghanistan around two elections to crowdsource reports and concerns about the voting process. Societal factors like education, infrastructure and gender are discussed in relation to the tool's use.
The War Begins to Change for Germany
By fall 1942 - 1943, the Germans and USSR fought for control of Stalingrad, which resulted in a German loss. From 1943 - 1945, the Germans were on the defensive and the USSR slowly re-conquered its territory at heavy losses. North Africa and Italy fell to the Allies from 1942 - 1943. The Allies invaded Italy in 1943 and Italy surrendered, with Germany controlling Northern Italy until the end of the war in 1945.
