Denise N. Morgan Students need regular opportunities to write expository text. However, focusing on report writing often leaves students without strong examples to study or analyze to guide and grow their own writing. Writing and studying feature articles, meant to inform and explain, can become an alternative to report writing, as they can easily be located in magazines and other print materials for students to study and examine. This article describes a research project on implementing a feature article unit of study with a fourth-grade class. Upon completion of the unit, the students identified, in an open-ended response, minilessons they felt made a difference in their learning and in their knowledge as writers. Four minilessons emerged as helpful to the students, each of which is described, and students' comments and stories about their experiences are intertwined within each lesson.

Lois Lowry, The Giver A young teacher tried her hand at developing her first differentiated lesson plan. “Could you give it a look and see if I’m on the right track?” she asked me. Her 4th graders were all reading the same novel. She had fashioned five tasks, and her plan was to assign each student one of the tasks, based on what she perceived to be their readiness levels. She showed me the task options: 1. Create a new jacket for the book. 2. Build a set for a scene in the book. 3. Draw one of the characters. 4. Rewrite the novel’s ending. 5. Good Curriculum as a Basis for Differentiation 61 After I looked at the tasks, I asked a question that I wish someone had insisted I answer daily in the first decade of my teaching: “What do you want each student to come away with as a result of this activity?” She squinted and paused. “I don’t understand,” she answered. I tried again: “What common insight or understanding should all kids get because they successfully complete their assigned task?” She shook her head. “I still don’t get it.” “OK, let me ask another way.” I paused. “Do you want each child to know that an author actually builds a character? Do you want them all to understand why the author took the time to write the book? Do you want them to think about how the main character’s life is like their own? Just what is it that the activities should help the students to make sense of?” Her face flushed. “Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed. “I don’t know. I thought all they were supposed to do was read the story and do something with it!” “Hazy” Lessons Many of us could have been this novice. We entered the profession with a vague sense that students should read, listen to, or watch something. Then they should do “some sort of activity” based on it. Consider the following examples: • A 1st grade teacher reads her students a story. Then she asks them to draw a picture of what they heard. But what should the picture portray? In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
