Islam, Terrorism, Jihad and Media Essay
Islam, Terrorism, Jihad and Media
A bomb goes off in a marketplace in Tel Aviv. A suicide bomber launches himself in a bus full of
people in the street of Baghdad. Foreign tourists get massacred at a holiday resort in Nairobi,
Kenya. This can go on and on. We all have heard this kind of pathetic news in the media. These
kinds of incidents are widely known as Islamic terrorism according to the western media. All such
incidents have come to be identified with the religion of Islam. Such incidents from past and present
have undoubtedly affected Muslims worldwide and more so in the West. Any Muslim, who wants
to practice his/her religion and expresses the pious desire to live under the umbrella of Islam, is
labeled a fundamentalist or...show more content...
The answer is simple. Such actions, if not sanctioned by the religion, have no place in Islam. They
are not Islamic and should not be thought of as Islamic.
The word jihad sends shivers down the spines of many Westerners. It readily comes to their mind
that this term is associated with violence and oppression. However, it must be said that the
meaning of jihad, as a 'holy war', is something which is totally foreign and not from Islam. By
simply looking into the sources of Islam, one will be able to know that the true meaning of jihad is
to strive/make effort in the way of Allah. Thus striving in the way of Allah can be both peaceful and
physical. The Prophet Muhammad (saws) said:
"The best jihad is (by) the one who strives against his own self for Allah, The Mighty and
Majestic"
In the Qur'an, Allah also says:
"So obey not the disbelievers, but make a great jihad (effort) against them (by preaching) with
it (the Qur'an)"
(Surah Al–Furqan 25:52)
By controlling and fighting against ones desires, the Muslims can then also physically exert
themselves in the path of Allah. It is this physical or combative jihad, which receives so much
criticism. Because of the sheer ignorance of this type of jihad, Islam is regarded as terror, and
Muslims are regarded as terrorists. However, the very purpose of this physical jihad is to raise the
word of Allah uppermost.

When Terror Reigns
They are us and we are them
The unfortunate portrayal of Muslims through the media, marginalises and misrepresents the
Muslims community. The media has introduced a distorted and unbalanced image of Islam and
Muslims, describing their religion as radical and violent, and portrayed followers as a group of
brutal barbarians. Although the media exposes Muslims as all terrorists, the minority of the Muslim
community are hidden behind the scenes, waiting for someone to speak up.
S'Vahna Livapulu reports. W hat do you think when you look at a Muslim? A person of faith? An
expert? Maybe even a friend. Or oppressed, brainwashed, a terrorist? Undeniably mass media has
developed the primary source of information and communication for the majority of, if not all,
members of modern societies. Amid the revolution mass media is causing, what is less discussed is
the drastic impact it is having on the misrepresentation of Muslims in society worldwide. Modern
society today, segregate and single out all Muslims as terrorists due to a minority of extremist's
organizations initiating terrorism in the name of Islam, the whole Muslim community is blamed for
it. Today, many people are saying things like, there's a problem in this world, and it's...show more

The media's negative influence on Muslims, foregrounds the aspects of society's perspective of
Muslims and misrepresents Muslims as a whole. One study showed that when subjects were exposed
to news stories that were negative about Muslims, they became more accepting of military attacks on
Muslim countries and policies that curtail rights of American Muslim. This reinforces how the
misrepresentation of Muslims through the media, has impacted society's outlook on Muslims and

Islamophobia means "act of fear and hostility towards the Islamic religion" (Alshammari). The
media has contributed a lot toward fearing the society with linking various global violence toward
the religion of Islam rather than signaling out a group of extremist who has overtaken the religion of
Islam. The word Islam means "peace" according to the Koran, but people now associate Islam with
violence rather than peace. The society has portrayed misleading interpretations of the real meaning
of Islam.
The Misconceptions of Islam
"All Muslims are Terrorists"
The misconception of Islam occurs quite often, because many writings and media mislead and give
a twisted picture of the Koran and Islam's teachings. One of the main misconception of Islam is
that all Muslims are terrorists; this happens mainly because of stereotyping and the image the media
and political leaders give. For instance, Republican front runner Donald Trump has suggested,
"Muslims should be singled out for surveillance, that mosques should be closed and even that
American Muslims should be forced to register as part of a national database and carry special
identification" (Awad). This sends out a...show more content...
The Koran rather teaches "freeing slave (whenever feasible) are blessed people in the eyes of God"
in surah (90:13) (McNamara). A lot of people anti–Muslim claim this outrageous claim to just further
their claim to persuade someone else to join them in hating anyone that practices the religion of
Islam. Another misconception society has about Islam is that the Koran states that female has no
right and they must obey the men is absolutely nonsense misconception. For instance, I hear
people say "Muslim females are forced to wear hijab" is wrong because Muslim female are not
forced to wear hijab they choose to wear it because it's part of our

Terrorism, I Am A Muslim And I Am Against It
"Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who
(1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive
their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve" This is how
Islam inculcates Muslims not to judge others, because obviously it's the Lord who does that. Despite
this verse and many other verses in Quran which promote for peace and love among humans, still
people combine Islam with terror. I have seen many false allegations about Islam in the media. All
that made me wonder, did I understand my religion wrong? What really interests me is whenever I

Al–Qaeda terrorist activities appear in many Islamic and non–Islamic countries. In Iraq in 2007,
Al–Qaeda led more than 4500 attacks, leaving almost 18000 civilians dead or wounded.
Islam and Jihad
Starting with the original word meaning of Islam in Arabic, which is Salam thus Peace, furthermore
the word has four other meanings which are surrender, submit, obey and sincerity. Jihad on the other
hand doesn't mean "holy war"; its actual meaning is Struggle in Allah's sake.
Allah (God's name in Islam) has created earth and the whole universe. HeВґs kind and merciful, and
also has the ultimate power regarding human's life. For a Muslim to exist is a blessing, that
perceives as gift from Allah to the humankind, so therefore Allah alone decides when to take this
bless away.
Jihad in Islam has two different aspects. Firstly, it's a struggle against our soul's desires. This
means keeping one's soul away from taboos and sins. According to the prophet it's the most likable
aspect. "The best jihad [struggle] is (by) the one who strives against his own self for Allah, the
Mighty and Majestic".
Secondly, it's to defend the Islamic countries from any kind of danger; this aspect is often connected
with terrorism. The importance of Jihad cannot be denied; in fact it's on top ten of the religious

If a caucasian person is involved in a shooting, it is not made a big deal, but if a Muslim person is
involved in a shooting, they must be a terrorist. Ever since the crusades, there has always been
hard feeling between Christians and Muslims. But after various terrorist attacks in the name of
Muslim religion, it seems that there are hard feeling between the whole world and Muslims.
Muslims are vilified, hated, and even called terrorists. But, is it justified to profile Muslims as
terrorists? No, it is not justified to profile muslims as terrorists. Those on both sides all have their
own opinion and reasons, being justified or not. Those who say yes are forgetting that not all
terrorists are muslims, the muslim religion is not about terrorism, and Islam is actually very similar to
Christianity. Common sense tells us that a few terrorists do not define a religion, and Muslims are
just as angered at terrorists as everyone else. Profiling all Muslims as terrorists, as natural as it is
for some, is contrary to the very basics of the freedom of religion in this country, along with what
most consider common sense. Unlike...show more content...
Through history, there has been some form of terrorism in many religions. Christians had terrorized
heretics through things like the Inquisition and the Klu Klux Klan, Jews terrorized through zealotry
in the first century, and Islamic groups are terrorizing in different ways today. But only one of those
religious terrorist acts seems to be the most recognized, which are the Muslim terrorist groups.
Although the acts terrorist and Islamic extremist groups, such as 9/11 and the Paris attack, are
certainly illegal and unjust, condemning 1.3 billion people for the acts of select terrorist groups, is

Essay Islam Does NOT Advocate Terrorism
A few years ago, an extreme offshoot of al–Qaeda proclaimed itself a caliphate in the Middle East.
Today, the entire world has witnessed ISIS commit brutal crimes against humanity, including
beheadings and other horrific acts of violence as well as its unlawful seizure and destruction of
public and private property in Iraq, Syria and beyond. Because of this, many people think that Islam
requires fighting non–Muslims, killing, invading other lands, etc. All these thoughts about Islam are
totally wrong.
Islam does not advocate any form of terrorism. Islam is not responsible for any terror operations
done by any movements that relates itself to Islam. According to the text mentioned in the Holy
Quran, killing a person is like killing all...show more content...
In his book "understanding Jihad," David cook discusses the differences between what's known
in Islam as the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad in the chapter "The Greater Jihad and the Lesser
Jihad." He argues that Jihad in Islam is divided into two different forms, i.e. the Greater Jihad and
the Lesser Jihad. He cites several interpretations of the meaning of Jihad from different Islamic
scholars of different Islamic doctrines including Sufism and Shiism. Many of those scholars argue
that Jihad has nothing to do with violence. They claim that Jihad in its general meaning is meant to
be a spiritual warfare. For example, Cook cites one of the Sufi scholar "the fighter is one who fights
his passions" (36). In addition, Al–Muhasibi and Ibn Abi Al–Dunya brought the idea of substituting
the fighting of lower self for aggressive Jihad, known as the Lesser Jihad. Both of them argue that
a Muslim must fight against his passions and desires in order to achieve worldly success (37). In
Islam, the Jihad against evil and lower self is considered higher in rank than the Jihad against the
aggressors. The reason behind this fact is the argument that the factors that prevent a person from
taking the risks of spiritual advancement are his worst enemies to the same extent that they would be
if that person were on a war fighting against

Islam : Terrorism And The Beliefs Of Terrorism
One of the biggest mistakes that we have made as a country is believing that Islam is completely
a religion of peace. Whether you believe that the past statement is true or false you cannot deny the
existence of terrorists and those who wish to prey on and cause terror in the lives of the innocent.
Terrorists only believe in themselves and their beliefs and will disown the thoughts of others on a
whim. Continuing it is false to claim that Islam cannot be reformed. Following Islam does not
instantly make you susceptible to violence, but Islam is inherently violent due to the religious holy
book the Quran. According to the website The Religion of Peace, the Quran contains at least 109
verses that speak of war with nonbelievers, usually on the basis of their status as non–Muslims. One
of these verses stating, "When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks" (Quran 47:4). Even
though this is in fact seen in the Quran the quote has also been taken out of context. Many websites
such as this attempt to make people believe the worst in a religion, not only that but they manage
to quite easily succeed in doing so. In the same fashion and just as simply as the websites stated
above, Terrorist organizations can easily manipulate the followers of Islam. Propaganda that is
spread by terrorist organizations is often spread around causing many to believe in what is being
induced upon them. The spread of terrorism is something that moves promptly and in condensed
bursts. We must work in

This post–modern event, so unprecedented not because of the amount of destruction, but because of
the unlikely U.S. target, needs a post–modern lens through which it can be viewed. With this in mind
I will discuss various aspects of the current crisis in light of scholarly methods of investigation in the
field of religion and myth.
Certain themes have emerged within the warring points of view as this drama unfolds. There is the
blurring of the distinction between Islam as a religion and the acts of terrorism that have occurred on
the political stage. It is being blurred in both directions. The terrorists are fusing the two realms
while the Americans and their allies are trying to make a rigid distinction between actions motivated
by hate and what they call envy of U.S. freedom versus Islam as a religion which they would like to
view as uncontaminated by cultural and political context. This theme lies within the domain of the
scholarly debates on "reductionism." Within this argument Mircea Eliade stands as the dominant
figure who makes the distinction between what he calls the sacred and the profane. He argues
against reductionism. He also states, with relevance to the current situation, that "the so–called
primitive peoples... are seeking to become active subjects of history instead of its passive objects, as

There may be some Muslims who are terrorists, but not all Muslims are terrorist and Islam as a
religion does not promote terrorism and defines as a religion of peace. Islam means submission to
god. Islam is a religion of peace and does not talk of doing violence at all. As many westerners
have the misconception that all Muslims are terrorists, and are involved in the killing of innocent

From there, it spread around the world, most notably to the Middle East, where car bombs, like the
one that shattered the federal office building in Oklahoma City, are now part of everyday life" (
Wright, ed). There have been terrorist attacks since the early nineties, but the deadliest attacks that
are happening against United States are linked to Al–Qaeda and all Muslims are stereotyped as
terrorists by the westerners with no proof. If what happened on 9/11 was terrorism then so is the
violence in Iraq and most recently in Lebanon. According to me, both Islam and Christianity are
great religions and both promote peace, and who ever is involved in killing innocent people does not
follow any religion."All Muslims may not be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims."(Aiyer 23)
This comment, frequently heard after the Mumbai bomb blasts implies that terrorism is a Muslim
specialty, if not a monopoly. Muslims are actively committing acts of terrorism in many parts of the
world and justifying it by pointing towards the Koran. Even the west is not untouched anymore.
Thirty new terrorist organizations have emerged since the September 11 attacks, outpacing the
United States' efforts to crush the threat. Recently, a court in Paris sentenced 25 Muslims militants
for planning attacks against the Eiffel Tower and other targets with explosives. All indications
suggests that Islamists were the perpetrators. One of my American friends

Despite the general resistance concerning the Islamic faith in today's environment, Islam is not all
that different from Christianity and Judaism. All three religions have extremists, and while it seems
that Islamic extremists are the worst, I think that is solely due to their methodology of when,
where, and how they attack. Many would disagree with me, but Christians can be equally as cruel
and radical; it's just on a much smaller scale. As with many things in today's society, if we would
just slow down and try to understand each other, much of the fear associated with Islam could

Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, is a monotheistic faith, meaning they believe in one God and
one God only. In their language, God is translated to "Allah". I think of Islam as the ultimate
monotheistic religion. As Kenneth Woodward mentions, the Qur'an utterly rejects the Christian
idea of the Holy Trinity as "polytheistic" ("Holy Books"). For Christians, the Holy Trinity is
essentially a symbolic idea of one person who manifests in different ways. Historically, it seems as
if Judaism is the most tolerant of the three. The earliest Israel was henotheistic, meaning that
although Israelites worshipped only one God, they did not deny the existence of other gods for
other nations. ("Judaism", Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia). As the Christians have
Jesus and the Jews have Moses as their main prophet, Islam has Mohammed. All three prophets are
considered the ultimate standard of what it means to be of each faith. Muhammed was actually
considered to be illiterate, but was still able to read, comprehend, and pass on what the angel Gabriel
showed him. He struggled for years with the knowledge that he had and realization that he needed to
share his message, which was spread through the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. Muhammad was
essentially a family and community man, sometimes turned warrior, concerned for his society,
needing to warn them of an impending judgement. (Johnson, 2015) His message

misconceptions about Christians, and Christian's misconceptions about Muslims, was a valid
concern. People are often swayed by media opinion, and portrayal. I know for me that most of what
I learned early on about Muslims was through the media.

Terrorism And Terrorism Essay
Terrorism has been a problem in the United States since the late 90s. Some of the key historical
incidents are the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, 9/11, and the Oklahoma City bombing. A
shadow that seems to hide behind terroristic acts is hate crimes and in particular, hate crimes
directed towards Muslims. Is there a causation between terrorism and anti–Muslim hate crime
incidents? If so, how big of an impact do terror attacks play on hate crimes? Studies have been
conducted regarding the interrelationship between hate crimes and terrorism and whether one is
dependent off of the other. The purpose of this study is to present data from the Uniform Crime
Reports (UCR) which provides data on hate crime incidents and the Global Terrorism Database
(GTD) which provides data on terroristic incidents in order to understand whether causation exists
between terrorism caused in the United States and anti–Muslim hate crimes. Hate crimes directed
towards Jews will as well be considered because of the long standing tension and conflicts between
the two. Do terrorism incidents cause anti–Muslim hate crime incidents to increase more than
anti–Jewish hate crime incidents or vice–versa?
Purpose of Research:

Terrorism And Terrorism Essay
Islam is the arab word for submission, it is the second most practiced religion world–wide but, in
the western world it is mostly regarded as a constant source of debate and conflict. Islamist
groups have been attributed to 48 out of the 50 most deadly terrorist attacks in the year 2017. This
figure is especially concerning if we consider that all this attacks had at least 19 decease, and up to
more than 250. But, while it is true that terrorism is a very present topic, we must take into account
that there are around 1.8 billion Muslims in the world and the most active islamist terrorist
organization (Islamic State) was estimated to be around 26.000 fighters (making it around
0.000015% of the total muslim population). When looking at any other type of data, this ridiculous
percentage would be dismissed as an outcast. There seems to be no reason to consider these few
individuals the "rule" but, if we consider they might be the ones actually following what their religion
dictates, the exception becomes a seemingly acceptable justification for discrimination. With people
killing people "in the name of God" and others preaching verses such as "O You who believe! Enter
absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of satan. He is an outright enemy to
you."– Holy Quran: 2, 208, many people have begun to ask themselves whether Islam is religion of
peace. Whether Islamic based terrorism is a version, or a perversion of the Qur'an. Not many

Islamic Terrorism And Religious Terrorism
Religious terrorism is regularly portrayed as demonstrations of unreasonable, silly and indiscriminate
violence, along these lines offering few, if any what really spur religious terrorism measures. This
presumption about religious terrorism comes from different nations, groups and individual's.
Unbalanced regard for prophetically catastrophic terrorism, and an absence of qualification between
religious terrorism and its mainstream partner. This article, in this manner, expects to do four things:
characterize and separate religiously inspired terrorism, confidence, and activism along the lines of
faith and violence. Furthermore, prescribe a scope of religion, confidence, and terrorism systems in
view of these perceptions. Keywords: Religion, faith, terrorism, violence
Is faith motivated activism a constructive force for change?
Yes, I most certainly trust so, faith itself is sufficient to persuade a productive power for change for
the great. Be that as it may, having faith alone is insufficient, faith must be joined by work keeping
in mind the end goal to be finished, faith without the work is dead. One must begin the venture and
after that believe in faith to bring it through. The scriptural meaning of faith from the book of
Hebrews11:1, Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Religious terrorism is a sort of political viciousness inspired by a flat out conviction that an
extraordinary force has endorsed and charged terrorist violence

Islam Extremism And Islamic Terrorism Essay
"Jama 'atu Ahl as–Sunnah li–Da 'awati wal–Jihad" (People Committed to the Propagation of the
Prophet 's Teachings and Jihad) is also known as Boko Haram, which translates to "Western
education is a sin" (Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, 2014). It is an extremist Islamic
group who fights against the Nigeria state. It has become a global concern because of its acts that
can be categorized as terrorism attack lately. The motive of its activities is to establish and expand
the Islamic empire based on an ideology that is religiously focused. There are two types of
interpretation value in the religion of Islam that are based on the ideology, the first is Moderate
Islam, which is an interpretation of Islam with substantives (cultural) viewpoint that rejects
extremism and terrorism (CG News, n.d). And the second is Islam Extremism. It is a concept
which describing Islamic law as a system that is believed could cover all parts of human life with
scriptural (textual) viewpoint. The Islamic extremists feel obligated to set up this form of
governance in the public space such as Muslim–dominated territories, countries and, eventually, the
entire world. They consider Islamic law as the only legitimate system of government. Generally,
they reject democracy and human rights values (Mauro, 2014).. To implement the ideology of

Islamic authority' because becoming 'scholars or Ulama of Islam' via western secular academia is
relatively a new phenomenon for majority of Muslims (Moosa 2015). Since the horrific events of 9
/11, Islam and Muslims especially has been the crux of much censure and debated in the media.
Muslims have been widely discussed by themes of 'migration', 'terrorism', and 'war'. In the
meta–analyses on the representation of Muslims and Islam in the media between 2000–2015, there
is the rise of Orientalist discourses in many mainstream media channels. The relationship between
Western nations and Muslims has been reinterpreted as divided societies. Thus, the 'clash of
civilizations' proposition has gained acceptance in intellectual debates and media coverages. There is
also a dominant antagonistic view about Islam and Muslims in many western countries (Ahmed and
Matthes 2016). The meta–study and recent many researches show that Muslims and Islam tend to
be negatively framed, which consequently led to the domination of the mass media via displays of
fear and anger as well as anti–Muslim sentiments (Bail 2015). In this context, Muslim intellectuals
have faced fierce criticism from various journalists and academics. For instance, prominent Muslims
intellectuals Tariq Ramadan has been criticized by doublespeak for general western society and
internal Muslims communities (Fourest 2008) and Khaled Abou El Fadl has been blamed by being

Islamophobia: Muslims and Terrorism
After 9/11 has induced negative attitudes towards Muslim peoples who tend to be strongly
associated with any act of terrorism. The media has played a colossal role in developing such
negative association wherein it constantly portrays Muslim people in combination with violent
terrorist acts. It does so in a way that they both go hand–and–hand. In other words, it has made it as
though the Islamic religion is synonymous with terrorism. The media has perpetuated Muslim

The connection between Islam and terrorism was not intensified until the 9/11 attack on the World
Trade Center that pushed the Islamic faith into the national and international spotlight (Smith,
2013). As Smith (2013) articulated, "Many Americans who had never given Islam a second
thought before 9/11 now had to figure out how to make sense of these events and relate to the faith
tradition that ostensibly inspired them" (p. 1). One way in which people made sense of these
events was through the media channels that influenced their overall opinions by shaping a
framework of censored ideas (Yusof, Hassan, Hassan & Osman, 2013). In a survey conducted by
Pew Forum (2012), 32% of people reported that their opinions of Muslims were greatly influenced by
the media's portrayal of Islam that depicted violent pictorials and fundamentalist Muslims. Such
constant negative depiction is likely to lead to the inevitable–prejudice and hate crime. For instance,
in 2002 alone there were approximately 481 hate crimes that were carried out against Muslims
(Smith, 2013). Ever since the 9/11 attacks Muslim people have been the target of "suspicion,
harassment and discrimination" (Talal, n.d., p. 9).
On the other end of the scale, people who are more familiar with the Islamic faith tend to report
more favorable attitudes towards Muslim people in comparison to those who are not well–educated

Terrorism And Islam Essay

  • 1. Islam, Terrorism, Jihad and Media Essay Islam, Terrorism, Jihad and Media A bomb goes off in a marketplace in Tel Aviv. A suicide bomber launches himself in a bus full of people in the street of Baghdad. Foreign tourists get massacred at a holiday resort in Nairobi, Kenya. This can go on and on. We all have heard this kind of pathetic news in the media. These kinds of incidents are widely known as Islamic terrorism according to the western media. All such incidents have come to be identified with the religion of Islam. Such incidents from past and present have undoubtedly affected Muslims worldwide and more so in the West. Any Muslim, who wants to practice his/her religion and expresses the pious desire to live under the umbrella of Islam, is labeled a fundamentalist or...show more content... The answer is simple. Such actions, if not sanctioned by the religion, have no place in Islam. They are not Islamic and should not be thought of as Islamic. The word jihad sends shivers down the spines of many Westerners. It readily comes to their mind that this term is associated with violence and oppression. However, it must be said that the meaning of jihad, as a 'holy war', is something which is totally foreign and not from Islam. By simply looking into the sources of Islam, one will be able to know that the true meaning of jihad is to strive/make effort in the way of Allah. Thus striving in the way of Allah can be both peaceful and physical. The Prophet Muhammad (saws) said: "The best jihad is (by) the one who strives against his own self for Allah, The Mighty and Majestic" In the Qur'an, Allah also says: "So obey not the disbelievers, but make a great jihad (effort) against them (by preaching) with it (the Qur'an)" (Surah Al–Furqan 25:52) By controlling and fighting against ones desires, the Muslims can then also physically exert themselves in the path of Allah. It is this physical or combative jihad, which receives so much criticism. Because of the sheer ignorance of this type of jihad, Islam is regarded as terror, and Muslims are regarded as terrorists. However, the very purpose of this physical jihad is to raise the word of Allah uppermost. Anyone who Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Terror Reigns Research Paper When Terror Reigns They are us and we are them The unfortunate portrayal of Muslims through the media, marginalises and misrepresents the Muslims community. The media has introduced a distorted and unbalanced image of Islam and Muslims, describing their religion as radical and violent, and portrayed followers as a group of brutal barbarians. Although the media exposes Muslims as all terrorists, the minority of the Muslim community are hidden behind the scenes, waiting for someone to speak up. S'Vahna Livapulu reports. W hat do you think when you look at a Muslim? A person of faith? An expert? Maybe even a friend. Or oppressed, brainwashed, a terrorist? Undeniably mass media has developed the primary source of information and communication for the majority of, if not all, members of modern societies. Amid the revolution mass media is causing, what is less discussed is the drastic impact it is having on the misrepresentation of Muslims in society worldwide. Modern society today, segregate and single out all Muslims as terrorists due to a minority of extremist's organizations initiating terrorism in the name of Islam, the whole Muslim community is blamed for it. Today, many people are saying things like, there's a problem in this world, and it's...show more content... The media's negative influence on Muslims, foregrounds the aspects of society's perspective of Muslims and misrepresents Muslims as a whole. One study showed that when subjects were exposed to news stories that were negative about Muslims, they became more accepting of military attacks on Muslim countries and policies that curtail rights of American Muslim. This reinforces how the misrepresentation of Muslims through the media, has impacted society's outlook on Muslims and disparaged their sense of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Islamophobia means "act of fear and hostility towards the Islamic religion" (Alshammari). The media has contributed a lot toward fearing the society with linking various global violence toward the religion of Islam rather than signaling out a group of extremist who has overtaken the religion of Islam. The word Islam means "peace" according to the Koran, but people now associate Islam with violence rather than peace. The society has portrayed misleading interpretations of the real meaning of Islam. The Misconceptions of Islam "All Muslims are Terrorists" The misconception of Islam occurs quite often, because many writings and media mislead and give a twisted picture of the Koran and Islam's teachings. One of the main misconception of Islam is that all Muslims are terrorists; this happens mainly because of stereotyping and the image the media and political leaders give. For instance, Republican front runner Donald Trump has suggested, "Muslims should be singled out for surveillance, that mosques should be closed and even that American Muslims should be forced to register as part of a national database and carry special identification" (Awad). This sends out a...show more content... The Koran rather teaches "freeing slave (whenever feasible) are blessed people in the eyes of God" in surah (90:13) (McNamara). A lot of people anti–Muslim claim this outrageous claim to just further their claim to persuade someone else to join them in hating anyone that practices the religion of Islam. Another misconception society has about Islam is that the Koran states that female has no right and they must obey the men is absolutely nonsense misconception. For instance, I hear people say "Muslim females are forced to wear hijab" is wrong because Muslim female are not forced to wear hijab they choose to wear it because it's part of our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Terrorism, I Am A Muslim And I Am Against It "Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve" This is how Islam inculcates Muslims not to judge others, because obviously it's the Lord who does that. Despite this verse and many other verses in Quran which promote for peace and love among humans, still people combine Islam with terror. I have seen many false allegations about Islam in the media. All that made me wonder, did I understand my religion wrong? What really interests me is whenever I look for the word terror on the internet; I find verses from...show more content... Al–Qaeda terrorist activities appear in many Islamic and non–Islamic countries. In Iraq in 2007, Al–Qaeda led more than 4500 attacks, leaving almost 18000 civilians dead or wounded. Islam and Jihad Starting with the original word meaning of Islam in Arabic, which is Salam thus Peace, furthermore the word has four other meanings which are surrender, submit, obey and sincerity. Jihad on the other hand doesn't mean "holy war"; its actual meaning is Struggle in Allah's sake. Allah (God's name in Islam) has created earth and the whole universe. HeВґs kind and merciful, and also has the ultimate power regarding human's life. For a Muslim to exist is a blessing, that perceives as gift from Allah to the humankind, so therefore Allah alone decides when to take this bless away. Jihad in Islam has two different aspects. Firstly, it's a struggle against our soul's desires. This means keeping one's soul away from taboos and sins. According to the prophet it's the most likable aspect. "The best jihad [struggle] is (by) the one who strives against his own self for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic". Secondly, it's to defend the Islamic countries from any kind of danger; this aspect is often connected with terrorism. The importance of Jihad cannot be denied; in fact it's on top ten of the religious Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Muslims Research Paper If a caucasian person is involved in a shooting, it is not made a big deal, but if a Muslim person is involved in a shooting, they must be a terrorist. Ever since the crusades, there has always been hard feeling between Christians and Muslims. But after various terrorist attacks in the name of Muslim religion, it seems that there are hard feeling between the whole world and Muslims. Muslims are vilified, hated, and even called terrorists. But, is it justified to profile Muslims as terrorists? No, it is not justified to profile muslims as terrorists. Those on both sides all have their own opinion and reasons, being justified or not. Those who say yes are forgetting that not all terrorists are muslims, the muslim religion is not about terrorism, and Islam is actually very similar to Christianity. Common sense tells us that a few terrorists do not define a religion, and Muslims are just as angered at terrorists as everyone else. Profiling all Muslims as terrorists, as natural as it is for some, is contrary to the very basics of the freedom of religion in this country, along with what most consider common sense. Unlike...show more content... Through history, there has been some form of terrorism in many religions. Christians had terrorized heretics through things like the Inquisition and the Klu Klux Klan, Jews terrorized through zealotry in the first century, and Islamic groups are terrorizing in different ways today. But only one of those religious terrorist acts seems to be the most recognized, which are the Muslim terrorist groups. Although the acts terrorist and Islamic extremist groups, such as 9/11 and the Paris attack, are certainly illegal and unjust, condemning 1.3 billion people for the acts of select terrorist groups, is not just prejudice, but pure Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay Islam Does NOT Advocate Terrorism A few years ago, an extreme offshoot of al–Qaeda proclaimed itself a caliphate in the Middle East. Today, the entire world has witnessed ISIS commit brutal crimes against humanity, including beheadings and other horrific acts of violence as well as its unlawful seizure and destruction of public and private property in Iraq, Syria and beyond. Because of this, many people think that Islam requires fighting non–Muslims, killing, invading other lands, etc. All these thoughts about Islam are totally wrong. Islam does not advocate any form of terrorism. Islam is not responsible for any terror operations done by any movements that relates itself to Islam. According to the text mentioned in the Holy Quran, killing a person is like killing all...show more content... In his book "understanding Jihad," David cook discusses the differences between what's known in Islam as the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad in the chapter "The Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad." He argues that Jihad in Islam is divided into two different forms, i.e. the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. He cites several interpretations of the meaning of Jihad from different Islamic scholars of different Islamic doctrines including Sufism and Shiism. Many of those scholars argue that Jihad has nothing to do with violence. They claim that Jihad in its general meaning is meant to be a spiritual warfare. For example, Cook cites one of the Sufi scholar "the fighter is one who fights his passions" (36). In addition, Al–Muhasibi and Ibn Abi Al–Dunya brought the idea of substituting the fighting of lower self for aggressive Jihad, known as the Lesser Jihad. Both of them argue that a Muslim must fight against his passions and desires in order to achieve worldly success (37). In Islam, the Jihad against evil and lower self is considered higher in rank than the Jihad against the aggressors. The reason behind this fact is the argument that the factors that prevent a person from taking the risks of spiritual advancement are his worst enemies to the same extent that they would be if that person were on a war fighting against Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Islam : Terrorism And The Beliefs Of Terrorism One of the biggest mistakes that we have made as a country is believing that Islam is completely a religion of peace. Whether you believe that the past statement is true or false you cannot deny the existence of terrorists and those who wish to prey on and cause terror in the lives of the innocent. Terrorists only believe in themselves and their beliefs and will disown the thoughts of others on a whim. Continuing it is false to claim that Islam cannot be reformed. Following Islam does not instantly make you susceptible to violence, but Islam is inherently violent due to the religious holy book the Quran. According to the website The Religion of Peace, the Quran contains at least 109 verses that speak of war with nonbelievers, usually on the basis of their status as non–Muslims. One of these verses stating, "When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks" (Quran 47:4). Even though this is in fact seen in the Quran the quote has also been taken out of context. Many websites such as this attempt to make people believe the worst in a religion, not only that but they manage to quite easily succeed in doing so. In the same fashion and just as simply as the websites stated above, Terrorist organizations can easily manipulate the followers of Islam. Propaganda that is spread by terrorist organizations is often spread around causing many to believe in what is being induced upon them. The spread of terrorism is something that moves promptly and in condensed bursts. We must work in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. "I am scared because I don't exactly know and understand the complex world problems that would cause people to direct their hatred toward America" (Mary Coleman, New York Times News Service 9/14) Even during the initial shock of September 11 that swelled my patriotism, even amidst the solemn mood of heroism that stirred my respect for the victims, their families, the New York City workers, and in spite of a sudden admiration for the media and for our leaders in government for their strength, resolve and composure, something in me knew that after the dust and debris had settled that this would be the essential question we would be left to wrestle with. This question posed by Mary Coleman just days after the attack,...show more content... This post–modern event, so unprecedented not because of the amount of destruction, but because of the unlikely U.S. target, needs a post–modern lens through which it can be viewed. With this in mind I will discuss various aspects of the current crisis in light of scholarly methods of investigation in the field of religion and myth. Certain themes have emerged within the warring points of view as this drama unfolds. There is the blurring of the distinction between Islam as a religion and the acts of terrorism that have occurred on the political stage. It is being blurred in both directions. The terrorists are fusing the two realms while the Americans and their allies are trying to make a rigid distinction between actions motivated by hate and what they call envy of U.S. freedom versus Islam as a religion which they would like to view as uncontaminated by cultural and political context. This theme lies within the domain of the scholarly debates on "reductionism." Within this argument Mircea Eliade stands as the dominant figure who makes the distinction between what he calls the sacred and the profane. He argues against reductionism. He also states, with relevance to the current situation, that "the so–called primitive peoples... are seeking to become active subjects of history instead of its passive objects, as they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Islam and Terrorism Sadiq Khan Mc. Cook English 1302 20 November 2006 Does Islam Promote Terrorism? There may be some Muslims who are terrorists, but not all Muslims are terrorist and Islam as a religion does not promote terrorism and defines as a religion of peace. Islam means submission to god. Islam is a religion of peace and does not talk of doing violence at all. As many westerners have the misconception that all Muslims are terrorists, and are involved in the killing of innocent people. I will prove that all Muslims are not terrorists and if at all the culprits are Muslim; they have twisted the teachings of Islam. The dictionary meaning of terrorism is the unlawful or threatened use of violence...show more content... From there, it spread around the world, most notably to the Middle East, where car bombs, like the one that shattered the federal office building in Oklahoma City, are now part of everyday life" ( Wright, ed). There have been terrorist attacks since the early nineties, but the deadliest attacks that are happening against United States are linked to Al–Qaeda and all Muslims are stereotyped as terrorists by the westerners with no proof. If what happened on 9/11 was terrorism then so is the violence in Iraq and most recently in Lebanon. According to me, both Islam and Christianity are great religions and both promote peace, and who ever is involved in killing innocent people does not follow any religion."All Muslims may not be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims."(Aiyer 23) This comment, frequently heard after the Mumbai bomb blasts implies that terrorism is a Muslim specialty, if not a monopoly. Muslims are actively committing acts of terrorism in many parts of the world and justifying it by pointing towards the Koran. Even the west is not untouched anymore. Thirty new terrorist organizations have emerged since the September 11 attacks, outpacing the United States' efforts to crush the threat. Recently, a court in Paris sentenced 25 Muslims militants for planning attacks against the Eiffel Tower and other targets with explosives. All indications suggests that Islamists were the perpetrators. One of my American friends Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Despite the general resistance concerning the Islamic faith in today's environment, Islam is not all that different from Christianity and Judaism. All three religions have extremists, and while it seems that Islamic extremists are the worst, I think that is solely due to their methodology of when, where, and how they attack. Many would disagree with me, but Christians can be equally as cruel and radical; it's just on a much smaller scale. As with many things in today's society, if we would just slow down and try to understand each other, much of the fear associated with Islam could dissipate, with the knowledge that not all who practice Islam are the evil ISIS or al–Qaeda members we hear and see on the news. As a matter of fact, true...show more content... Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, is a monotheistic faith, meaning they believe in one God and one God only. In their language, God is translated to "Allah". I think of Islam as the ultimate monotheistic religion. As Kenneth Woodward mentions, the Qur'an utterly rejects the Christian idea of the Holy Trinity as "polytheistic" ("Holy Books"). For Christians, the Holy Trinity is essentially a symbolic idea of one person who manifests in different ways. Historically, it seems as if Judaism is the most tolerant of the three. The earliest Israel was henotheistic, meaning that although Israelites worshipped only one God, they did not deny the existence of other gods for other nations. ("Judaism", Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia). As the Christians have Jesus and the Jews have Moses as their main prophet, Islam has Mohammed. All three prophets are considered the ultimate standard of what it means to be of each faith. Muhammed was actually considered to be illiterate, but was still able to read, comprehend, and pass on what the angel Gabriel showed him. He struggled for years with the knowledge that he had and realization that he needed to share his message, which was spread through the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. Muhammad was essentially a family and community man, sometimes turned warrior, concerned for his society, needing to warn them of an impending judgement. Terrorism And Muslim Misconceptions The issues pertaining to terrorism and Muslims is an issue that has been topic of conversation in many American homes, and it's an issue that needs to be addressed. It was important to hear that Raheem is a Christian, and has pride in her country. Rheims concern was about Muslims misconceptions about Christians, and Christian's misconceptions about Muslims, was a valid concern. People are often swayed by media opinion, and portrayal. • 12. Terrorism And Terrorism Essay Terrorism has been a problem in the United States since the late 90s. Some of the key historical incidents are the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, 9/11, and the Oklahoma City bombing. A shadow that seems to hide behind terroristic acts is hate crimes and in particular, hate crimes directed towards Muslims. Is there a causation between terrorism and anti–Muslim hate crime incidents? If so, how big of an impact do terror attacks play on hate crimes? Studies have been conducted regarding the interrelationship between hate crimes and terrorism and whether one is dependent off of the other. The purpose of this study is to present data from the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) which provides data on hate crime incidents and the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) which provides data on terroristic incidents in order to understand whether causation exists between terrorism caused in the United States and anti–Muslim hate crimes. Hate crimes directed towards Jews will as well be considered because of the long standing tension and conflicts between the two. Do terrorism incidents cause anti–Muslim hate crime incidents to increase more than anti–Jewish hate crime incidents or vice–versa? Purpose of Research: The biggest concern all over the world that is portrayed through media happens to be terrorism. Terrorism and hate crimes affect society in so that it is a major problem faced around the world. • 13. Terrorism And Terrorism Essay Islam is the arab word for submission, it is the second most practiced religion world–wide but, in the western world it is mostly regarded as a constant source of debate and conflict. Islamist groups have been attributed to 48 out of the 50 most deadly terrorist attacks in the year 2017. This figure is especially concerning if we consider that all this attacks had at least 19 decease, and up to more than 250. But, while it is true that terrorism is a very present topic, we must take into account that there are around 1.8 billion Muslims in the world and the most active islamist terrorist organization (Islamic State) was estimated to be around 26.000 fighters (making it around 0.000015% of the total muslim population). When looking at any other type of data, this ridiculous percentage would be dismissed as an outcast. There seems to be no reason to consider these few individuals the "rule" but, if we consider they might be the ones actually following what their religion dictates, the exception becomes a seemingly acceptable justification for discrimination. With people killing people "in the name of God" and others preaching verses such as "O You who believe! Enter absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of satan. • 15. Islamic Terrorism And Religious Terrorism Religious terrorism is regularly portrayed as demonstrations of unreasonable, silly and indiscriminate violence, along these lines offering few, if any what really spur religious terrorism measures. This presumption about religious terrorism comes from different nations, groups and individual's. Unbalanced regard for prophetically catastrophic terrorism, and an absence of qualification between religious terrorism and its mainstream partner. This article, in this manner, expects to do four things: characterize and separate religiously inspired terrorism, confidence, and activism along the lines of faith and violence. Furthermore, prescribe a scope of religion, confidence, and terrorism systems in view of these perceptions. Keywords: Religion, faith, terrorism, violence Is faith motivated activism a constructive force for change? Yes, I most certainly trust so, faith itself is sufficient to persuade a productive power for change for the great. Be that as it may, having faith alone is insufficient, faith must be joined by work keeping in mind the end goal to be finished, faith without the work is dead. One must begin the venture and after that believe in faith to bring it through. The scriptural meaning of faith from the book of Hebrews11:1, Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Religious terrorism is a sort of political viciousness inspired by a flat out conviction that an extraordinary force has endorsed and charged terrorist violence Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. Inherently Violent: A Study On Islam Inherently Violent: A Study on Islam The debate on whether or not the Islamic religion actually produces terrorists and condones violence continues on and will continue on for as long as the religion exists. Both sides do have valid arguments. Some say that Islamic Extremists like ISIS are only interpreting the Quran in their own sick and twisted way, but when one actually looks into the holy book and studies it to its extent, they see that it calls Muslims to war with nonbelievers more than it does to make peace with them. The Quran also states to chop off the hands of thieves, and stone adulteresses. However, many modern day Muslims express their freedom to interpret the Quran their own way. So what's the problem with it then? The problem Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Islamic authority' because becoming 'scholars or Ulama of Islam' via western secular academia is relatively a new phenomenon for majority of Muslims (Moosa 2015). Since the horrific events of 9 /11, Islam and Muslims especially has been the crux of much censure and debated in the media. Muslims have been widely discussed by themes of 'migration', 'terrorism', and 'war'. In the meta–analyses on the representation of Muslims and Islam in the media between 2000–2015, there is the rise of Orientalist discourses in many mainstream media channels. The relationship between Western nations and Muslims has been reinterpreted as divided societies. Thus, the 'clash of civilizations' proposition has gained acceptance in intellectual debates and media coverages. There is also a dominant antagonistic view about Islam and Muslims in many western countries (Ahmed and Matthes 2016). The meta–study and recent many researches show that Muslims and Islam tend to be negatively framed, which consequently led to the domination of the mass media via displays of fear and anger as well as anti–Muslim sentiments (Bail 2015). In this context, Muslim intellectuals have faced fierce criticism from various journalists and academics. For instance, prominent Muslims intellectuals Tariq Ramadan has been criticized by doublespeak for general western society and internal Muslims communities (Fourest 2008) and Khaled Abou El Fadl has been blamed by being a stealth Islamist due to his works on Islam and politics Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Islamophobia: Muslims and Terrorism After 9/11 has induced negative attitudes towards Muslim peoples who tend to be strongly associated with any act of terrorism. The media has played a colossal role in developing such negative association wherein it constantly portrays Muslim people in combination with violent terrorist acts. It does so in a way that they both go hand–and–hand. In other words, it has made it as though the Islamic religion is synonymous with terrorism. The media has perpetuated Muslim stereotypes over the years that followed the 9/11 incident. Because of this, society has developed, and still has developed, this prejudiced mindset about the Islamic religion and the Muslim communities around the world. People immediately assume that any violent act being...show more content... The connection between Islam and terrorism was not intensified until the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center that pushed the Islamic faith into the national and international spotlight (Smith, 2013). As Smith (2013) articulated, "Many Americans who had never given Islam a second thought before 9/11 now had to figure out how to make sense of these events and relate to the faith tradition that ostensibly inspired them" (p. 1). One way in which people made sense of these events was through the media channels that influenced their overall opinions by shaping a framework of censored ideas (Yusof, Hassan, Hassan & Osman, 2013). In a survey conducted by Pew Forum (2012), 32% of people reported that their opinions of Muslims were greatly influenced by the media's portrayal of Islam that depicted violent pictorials and fundamentalist Muslims. Such constant negative depiction is likely to lead to the inevitable–prejudice and hate crime. For instance, in 2002 alone there were approximately 481 hate crimes that were carried out against Muslims (Smith, 2013). Ever since the 9/11 attacks Muslim people have been the target of "suspicion, harassment and discrimination" (Talal, n.d., p. 9). On the other end of the scale, people who are more familiar with the Islamic faith tend to report more favorable attitudes towards Muslim people in comparison to those who are not well–educated about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
