This document discusses different types of light bulbs and their applications. It describes incandescent bulbs, which are the most common household light and produce a warm glow. Halogen bulbs are an innovative form of incandescent bulb that extends the life of the bulb. Fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient and produce less heat than incandescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights fit into standard sockets. High-intensity discharge (HID) lights are very bright and efficient, used for outdoor lighting. LED lights are long-lasting and efficient but not ready to replace all lighting systems.
2. The most common type of lighting found in
households and comes in a wide range of sizes and
voltage. They light up when the electricity heats up
the tungsten filament in these bulbs until they give
out a glow. They emit a steady warm lighting and can
be used for most household applications. They
produce a high level of brightness and can be used
for task lights.
Incandescent Lighting
3. Common Light Bulbs
The most common light bulbs, they emit a
yellowish light and the bulb comes in a clear
or frosted finish. Clear bulbs give out an
intense light while frosted ones emit a soft
and diffused light. They come in basic, globe
and decorative shapes.
4. Halogen lights are an innovative and efficient form of
incandescent lighting. These bulbs come filled with a
halogen gas. The halogen gas reacts with the
tungsten that had been previously evaporated and
prevent it from sticking to the glass surface. It also
allows some of the tungsten to return to the filament.
The process is known as the halogen cycle chemical
reaction, and it extends the life of the bulb.

5. REFLECTORIZED
They have a reflective coating on the inner
surface of the bulb, and it reflects the light
to specific direction rather than dispersing
the light in all directions.

6. Halogen lights produce a crisp white
light and can be used for illuminating
large and colorful spaces like homes,
drama theaters and art galleries, or they
can be used for under-cabinet lighting,
pendant lights, task lighting and
recessed cans.

7. One major disadvantage of halogen lights is
that they produce a lot of heat and put an
extra toll on your air conditioning system
and energy bills.

8. Fluorescent bulbs are filled with mercury vapors and argon gas, and it emits UV light when electricity is
applied. The bulb lights up when the UV rays hit the phosphorus coating on the inside of the bulb, causing
it to glow. Fluorescent lights require a ballast to provide the right amount of voltage.
They are used for lighting up large areas in commercial spaces. Though they cost more than incandescent
lights, they are more energy efficient and helps in saving your energy bills on a long term. They also
produce very little heat.
The color of the light depends on the blend of the phosphor. Currently, there are six standards of phosphor
blends; they are – cool white, deluxe cool white, warm white, deluxe warm white, white and daylight. The
fluorescent lighting comes mainly in the form of long tubes, in addition to U-shaped and circular bulbs.

9. Compact Fluorescent Light
The compact fluorescent light works like the normal
fluorescent light except that the glass tube is bent and
fixed to a base which holds the ballast. This is designed
so as to fit into a normal incandescent bulb socket.
Though they are expensive, they are highly efficient in
saving energy as they use only a quarter of the energy
consumed by an incandescent light and lasts almost
ten times longer, thus helping you save energy in the
long run.
10. CFL
Compact Fluorescent Lights emit a cool, bluish, dull
light, CFLs produce a warmer colour corrected tone.
This is because CFLs use rare earth phosphors which
give the light its hue and warmth. They come in
standard, spiral, globe, candelabra and triple tube
forms.
As compact fluorescent lights contain mercury, care
should be taken to avoid breakage, especially
during disposal.
11. This is an electrical discharge bulb that lights up light by an electric arc
between tungsten electrodes inside a translucent or transparent fused
quartz or fused alumina arc tube. It requires a ballast to regulate the
voltage.
They produce highly intense light at high efficiency and so are mainly
used for outdoor lighting purposes.
HIGH-INTENSITY DISCHARGE LIGHTS

12. They are semiconductor devices that emit
produce light when an electrical current is
passed through them and illuminates the
diodes in them. These are long lasting and
highly efficient. However, they are not ready
to replace the entire lighting systems as they
provide only directional lighting and not
diffused lighting. So, they can be used for task
lighting, accents and decorative illumination.
Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
13. Mercury Vapor Lamps – Formerly used for lighting
streets, but now they are becoming obsolete.
Metal halide lamps – Produces intense white lights
and are used to illuminate indoor and outdoor areas
like sports stadiums, gymnasiums, parking areas, etc.
High-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting – Used
popularly for street lighting and outdoor lighting.
Though they have a yellow tint, they are highly
efficient and is long lasting.
