The document describes a hypothetical post-hardcore band called "My band" that conforms to many of the typical conventions and stereotypes of the post-hardcore music genre. It notes that the band members will be male, between 19-23 years old, white, and from working class backgrounds. It also discusses the band's values of patriotism and support for equality issues. Costuming, facial expressions, lighting, and song choice ("King Park" by La Dispute) are selected to be typical of the post-hardcore genre. The band aims to appeal to a working class target audience by mirroring their backgrounds and producing personally relatable music.
2. My band conform to the post-hardcore genre
through their appearance.
The band members will be between the ages of 19
to 23 and will all be male. This is typical of the
post-hardcore genre.
All members of the band are white and come
from working class backgrounds, making it easy
to relate to the target audience (working class).
This is also typical of the genre as the music
produced in the genre tend to be heartfelt and
about personal, traumatic experiences.
Who are they?
3. My band are patriotic but are however laid back
on their values and support issues such as
equality, which is what most artists in the post-
hardcore genre follow and believe, therefore
making them a typical post-hardcore band.
Values and beliefs
4. Costume = black skinny jeans, baggy t-shirts
(other bands merch), Converse or Vans, check
shirts, messy hair.
Props = instruments, mic stand, cigarettes.
Facial expressions/body language = depends on
theme of song – relaxed, smiling/laughing, laid
back/tense, angry, aggressive.
Lighting/colour = mostly high key lighting if
there is a narrative, low key lighting if
performance. Both key in post-hardcore music
genre.

5. I’m using La Dispute – King Park as it’s by a well-
known post-hardcore band who are also known
for their deep and meaningful songs.
It fits with the codes and conventions of the post-
hardcore genre.

Song choice
6. I would like to have reinforced the majority of
stereotypes for my post-hardcore band, as the
costumes fit the genre and the age range for this
genre and the band is 19 to 23, which is the
common age for most post-hardcore artists.
The only thing challenging the stereotypes of the
genre is that there may be more narrative than
performance. Within the performance, the
identity of the band will remain unknown
throughout the video.
Representation theory
7. My band will appeal to my target audience as
they conform to the audience background in
terms of being working class and with the age
range, therefore making them relatable to them.
The fact that the music made by most post-
hardcore bands are made to relate to their
audience will also appeal to the audience.
