Having Your Own Home
1. Having your own home
Presentation for Radical Visions for Social Care by
Dr Simon Duffy
2. Basic assumptions
Why can’t everyone have their own home?
1. Home is an essential part of citizenship
2. Home helps us be safe, well, rooted and connected
3. Institutions are organised homelessness
4. We know how to support everyone in their own home
5. But we still have not learned to end our addiction to institutionalisation
6. We need a new approach to end institutionalisation and homelessness for all
3. The conditions for equality
• Home is where we can both
retreat to protect our freedom,
privacy and love
• Home is where we can invite
others or step out to take our
place in the life of the community
• Without secure roots we do not
thrive, without established
presence we do not connect.
Keys to Citizenship
4. Organised homelessness
• Illness and death
• Harm and abuse
• Poverty
• No freedom and privacy
• No connection, love and family
• No opportunities or meaning

13. Kill off the demand side
• Many others are also exiled from
their neighbourhoods
• Problems faced by disabled
people are economic and
political
• We should build wider alliances
• We need to address deeper
injustices
Time for a new approach
