In Ayurveda, drugs have been classified according to
pharmacological action. If comparative study is done on modes of
classification of drugs in Ayurveda and Allopathic, it can be concluded
that modern drug classification is similar to ancient one.

experiments have been summarized here in order to
correlate & justify its nomenclature

Gastric acid secretion was increased nearly four-fold by T. ammi.

for the libido enhancement activity at doses 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg
using automated runway methodology and copulatory behavior models.
The results revealed that the extract significantly improved the runway
parameters and copulatory behavior exhibiting its effectiveness in
enhancing the female libido1

Research
 In a clinical trial comprising 30 patients,Ativisha is found to be
effective in Atisara. the ant-diarrheal activity of roots of A. heterophyllum
may be attributed to an antisecretory and anti-enteropooling type effect
as a result of reactivation of Na + and K + ATPase activity mediated
through NO pathway. EAH causes either a decrease in mucosal secretion
or increase in mucosal absorption, which allows the feces to become desic
cated thus retarding its movement through the colon. The above activity
was well supported with a potential antibacterial activity. Thus, the
present study justifies the use of roots of A. heterophyllum in treatment of
diarrhea.

 The present study demonstrated prophylactic and
therapeutic potential of Terminalia arjuna bark extract in
isoproterenol (ISO)-induced chronic heart failure (CHF).
Fifteen days after injection of ISO (85 mg/kg twice at an
interval of 24 h, s.c), rats showed fall of left ventricular
pressure, cardiac contractility index (LV (dP/dt)max/LVP),
and rise in cardiac output ,LV end-diastolic pressure. CHF
rats showed a significant increase in serum creatine kinase
isoenzyme-MB (CK-MB) increased level of cytokine tumour
necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) along with histological changes in
heart were also observed in CHF rats. . Cardioprotective
action of T. arjuna was comparable to fluvastatin, a synthetic
drug. The results suggest that T. arjuna bark extract has a
significant prophylactic and therapeutic beneficial effect on
protection of heart against ISO-induced CHF possibly
through maintaining endogenous antioxidant enzyme
activities, inhibiting lipid peroxidation and cytokine levels.

Research
 Oxytocic activity of the plant was seen in rat and
human isolated uterine preparations. Estrogen-primed or
gravid uterus was more sensitive to the action of the
alcoholic extract. The bark of Saraca ashoka, which is the
real potent drug, is reported to have a stimulating effect
on the endometrium and ovarian tissue tonic contraction
and is therefore very valuable in treating problems like
menorrhagia due to uterine fibroids, in leucorrhea and in
internal bleeding. Ashoka or Saraca indica is helpful in all

Anti convulsant activity of methanolic extract of leaf of
Saraca indica Linn shows that it could have blocked the
seizure spread by inhibiting Na+ channels and glutamatergic
excitation through NMDA enhancement of GABA activity
[26]. Hence from the results indicated the presence of

Research
 The anabolic steroids from Cissus quadrangularis
showed marked influence in the rate of fracture healing by
influencing early regeneration of all connective tissues
involved in the healing and quicker mineralization of callus.1
 Systemic use of Cissus quadrangularis restores fracture in
four weeks in trial group while the controls required six
weeks. That is due to increase in mucopolysaccharides
level,proliferation of osteoblastic, chondroblastic and cartilage
proliferation, increased mineralization in the callus. Thus the
parenteral administration of the total extract of Cissus
quadrangularis not only neutralized the anti-anabolic effect of
cortisone in healing of fractures but also enhances the
mineralization of the callus possibly due to its vitamin
contents.2

Research

 The fruits extracts of Emblica officinalis (Amla) has
been reported to have strong anti-oxidant properties..
Chromium (Cr), an immunosuppressive agent results in
enhanced cytotoxicity, free radical production, lipid
peroxidation and decreased glutathione peroxidase (GPx)
activity and diminished glutathione (GSH) levels. There was a
significant inhibition concanavalin-A-stimulated lymphocyte
proliferation. Chromium also inhibited Con A .Amla
significantly inhibited Cr-induced free radical production and
restored the anti-oxidant status back to control level. Amla
also inhibited apoptosis and DNA fragmentation induced by Cr.
Interestingly, Amla relieved the immunosuppressive effects of
Cr on lymphocyte proliferation and even restored the IL-2 and
γ-IFN production considerably.

Central analgesic activity:
The crude extract of root bark of R. communis possesses central
analgesic activity in tail flick response model to radiant heat at a dose of
250mg/kg. The ethanolic extract of pericarp of root bark of R. communis
possesses typical CNS stimulant and neuroleptic effects. The stimulant
effects, such a exophthamus, hyperreactivity (evidenced by tremors or by
the pinna and grip-strength reaction), memory improvement and clonic
seizures, seem to be due to the presence of the alkaloid ricinine. On the other
hand,compounds other than ricinine may be responsible for the neuroleptic-
like effects of the extract,because ricinine did not cause reduction of
locomotor activity or catalepsy in the mice.

Gautam et al. 2008 studied effects of Solanum xanthocarpum extract on some of
the parameters like smooth muscle relaxation, and antagonism of asthma mediators
such as histamine, eiosinophils and protection against mast cell degranulation which
seemed to be prominent in pathophysiology of asthma. Further they showed that
ethanol extract of Solanum xanthocarpum shown a significant antihistaminic activity
in histamine induced contractionin goat tracheal chain preparation.Thus, the
significant inhibition of histamine induced contractions produced by ethanol extract
of Solanum xanthocarpum flower on isolated goat tracheal chain preparation indicates
that the Solanum xanthocarpum flower has antihistaminic (H1- receptor antagonist)
action.While screening the all three extracts of flowers of Solanum xanthocarpum,
results were indicative that only ethanolic extract of Solanum xanthocarpum at a dose
of 50 and 100 mg / kg reduced milkinduced eiosinophilia of statistical significance.
Solanum xanthocarpum at a dose of (50- 100 mg/kg, i.p) showed significant mast cell
stabilization as compared to standard drug

 Methanolic extract of Mucuna pruriens seed was
tested for their possible androgenic activity in
Wistermale albino rats. The methanolic extract of
M. pruriens plant was gavaged separately into 2
group of ratat similar doses of 1000 mg/kg b.wt and
1500 mg/kg b.wt for 30 days. At the end of the
treatment, the animals were killed and the blood,
testis, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate
were collected for biochemical analysis. The
methanolic extracts of M. pruriens significantly
increased the relative weight of the testis, serum
and testicular testosterone level, protein level in
the testis and epididymis, and epididymal alkaline
phosphatase activity. The methanolic extracts of
M.pruriens possess androgenic activity.

H. antidysenterica produces gastrointestinal tract
stimulation by activation of histamine receptors and
relaxes the gastrointestinal tract by Ca++ channel
blockade, which provided the basic ground for its
usefulness in gut motility problems such as

Research:
 The ethanolic extract of seeds of A. longifolia was
administered to groups of rats in 100, 150 and 200 mg
kg⁻¹ doses for a period of 28 days, and the action
compared with control rats. The ethanolic extract
exhibited pronounced anabolic effects in treated animals,
as evidenced by gains in the body and reproductive organ
weights. Increased spermatogenesis due to treatment with
extracts was also witnessed in transverse section. The
treatment further markedly affected sexual behaviour of
the animals, as reflected by the reduction of ML, increase
in MF and enhanced attractability towards females. A
significant increase in the sperm count as well as fructose
levels of seminal vesicles was noted.

 Significant reduction of blood glucose level was observed in non
diabetic albino rats following single dose treatment with the test drug at a

Anti-inflammatory activity-
An experimental study was carried out(Rajashekar M et al;
2006) to evaluate the effect of oral administration of root
powder of O. turpethum and its polyherbal formulation
Avipattikar churna on rat paw edema in albino rats. Results
indicated that pretreatment with the root powder of O.
turpethum and Avipattikara churna (100 mg/kg body
weight)reduced the formalin induced edema volume tothe
extent of 36.45% and 27.11%respectively.

 The main constituents of root were identified as
berberine, berbamine and palmatine through HPTLC.
The extract besides being safe, lowered the blood
glucose significantly without any hypoglycemic effect on
their control counterparts. It increased CAT, SOD,
GPx, GR activity significantly and reduced lipid
peroxidation (41.6%) and protein carbonylation
(30.15%). It also increased the glucokinase and glucose-
6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities Thus, the extract
of Berberis sristata (root) has strong potential to
regulate glucose homeostasis through decreased
gluconeogenesis and oxidative stress.

showed good hepato protective activity when
administered at doses of 10mg/kg and 20 mg/kg; i/p

Mode of Action
 The drug Bakuchi dilates the arterioles of the
subcapillary plexuses, so that the plasma is increased in
this area. The skin becomes red and the melanoblasts
(pigment-forming cells) are stimulated. In leukoderma,
melanoblasts do not function properly and their
stimulation by the drug leads them to form and exudate
pigments, which gradually diffuse into the white
leukodermic patches. Psoralen has been found to
intercalate into DNA, where they form mono- and di-
adducts in the presence of long wavelength UV light
and thus are used for the treatment of hypo-pigmented

Evaluation of anthelmintic activity of nuts of
Semecarpusanacardium
The anthelmintic activity of different extracts of nuts
of Semecarpus anacardium were evaluated separately on adult
Indian earthworm (Pheritima posthuma). It was found that
petroleum ether, chloroform extract of S. anacardium (PESA
and CESA, respectively) showed better anthelmintic activities
than ethanol (EESA) and aqueous (AESA) extract of it.
