2. Introduction
 Sherif Mohamed El-Refai is a current PhD
student in pharmaceutical sciences at the
University of Kentucky, where he focuses his
studies on clinical and experimental
therapeutics. Sherif Mohamed El-Refai also
conducts oncology research at the University
of Kentucky Hospital, which is home to the
Markey Cancer Center. To develop innovative
ways to fight lung cancer, the Markey Cancer
Center and the University of Kentucky are
currently sponsoring a number of lung cancer
trials.

3. Markey Cancer Center
 The Markey Cancer Center is currently recruiting
participants for a single-arm, phase II clinical trial on
thoracoscopic lung cancer staging with the use of
intraoperative ultrasound at the time of definitive
resection. The study aims to determine the efficacy of
intraoperative ultrasound during surgery in identifying
missed lymph nodes that may be pathologic. The
University of Kentucky is also co-sponsoring a
smoking cessation study, designed to optimize results
for individuals with new or recurrent diagnoses of
lung, head, and neck cancers.
