This presentation was given at the ESCalate conference in April 2008, held at Stirling University, Scotland. It describes Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) approaches in two undergraduate BSc Information Management classes. The intervention in one of the modules, Inf104 Information Literacy, involved use of Second Life (SL) to carry out research interviews. The 2nd module, Inquiry in Information Management, focused on small scale research projects.

"Inquiry Based Learning with first year undergraduates" was presented by Sheila Webber in the virtual world Second Life at the "M2N4SL – Midnight to Noon Conference for Second Life Educators and Researchers" conference on 27 October 2011. In it, Sheila (Sheila Yoshikawa in SL) gives brief details of a class "Information Literacy" that is core to the BSc Information Management programmes at the University of Sheffield Information School. This class is delivered as blended learning, using an Inquiry Based Learning approach.

This presentation, "Information Literate in Second life" was given by Sheila Webber at the Creating Knowledge V conference, Turku, Finland, on 21st August 2008. In it I reflect on an intervention that is part of an Inquiry Based Learning approach to teaching information management and information literacy and report on the findings of the research inquiry (into Information Behaviour in Second Life that the students undertook. This version omits a few slides describing results in more detail, that were presented at the conference.

Exploring Inquiry-based Science Lab Instruction: STEM education programs have incorporated inquiry-based instruction (IBI) to improve student engagement, learning and retention in STEM programs. What defines IBI? How does it look in a college lab class? What are the benefits and challenges of IBI, and how are the challenges overcome? Attendees in this presentation participated in a model enzyme lab activity offered in four different levels of IBI, learned to identify and differentiate between the four levels of IBI, explored scaffolds in IBI and their uses to support student learning, and discussed the benefits and challenges involved in implementing IBI.

Poster presented at the International Union of Physiological Societies' Quadrennial Conference 2013 (Birmingham, UK). Abstract: Calls for reform in science education (1) and physiology education in particular (5), have long argued for an emphasis on the development of key scientific thinking skills to prepare students for the complex, novel problems they will face in the 21st Century workplace. In Australia, these skills have been formalised as a set of national academic standards for scientific thinking (4). Inquiry-based curricula have been shown to facilitate the development of key scientific thinking skills such as experimental design and data interpretation (6). Currently, there is a lack of empirical evidence detailing what students actually do in inquiry-based classes and which aspects of the curricula implementation shape their actions and learning. We have developed a vertically-integrated set of inquiry-based practical curricula for large cohorts (500-900 students) of first and second year physiology students (2). Our findings over three semesters (3, 7) demonstrate that this curricula design facilitates the development of students’ skills in scientific thinking and communication. Video recordings of a 22 students participating in inquiry classes were analysed to determine how students engage with the curricula and discuss their scientific ideas. Students also annotated these videos of themselves to highlight instances of scientific thinking, and described the development of their critical thinking skills in relation to the Australian national academic standards for scientific thinking (4) in interviews. The majority of the scientific thinking events occured during development of the hypotheses and experimental plans, and during analysis and interpretation of the experimental data. In contrast, students rarely demonstrated scientific thinking during the execution of the experiments and collection of the data – an omission that several students lamented in interviews when they later realised inconsistencies in the data that might have been addressed with more timely critical evaluation of the data. The authors of the presentation are Sheila Webber and Bill Johnston. The presentation was at the International Lifelong Learning Conference held in Yeppoon, Australia on 18th June 2008. The conference abstract was: "Information Literacy (IL) has been acknowledged as a key element of lifelong learning (Candy et al., 1994). The aim of this presentation is to explore the lifelong learning dimensions of pedagogies for IL in different disciplines. Our starting points are the categories of pedagogy for IL identified in a research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). We will look at them in relation to: a.Candy Report’s attributes and qualities of the lifelong learner in relation to the ideal structure of the undergraduate curriculum described in that report. b.The competing models of lifelong learning identified with OECD and UNESCO respectively. The AHRC project investigated conceptions of UK academics in four disciplines: Marketing, English, Chemistry and Civil Engineering. It is notable that some conceptions of teaching IL focused on the requirements for the students’ course of study, whilst others focused on supporting students both in their course and for their life beyond university. For example, in marketing one conception of pedagogy for IL was Helping students understand how information literacy is critical to them, for marketing and life whilst another was of Upgrading students’ information toolbox at an appropriate point (of the course). We will reflect how these differing approaches relate to different aspects of Candy’s model/structure. Similarly, some conceptions focused more on students’ development as people and citizens (thus with more connection to the UNESCO view), and others on students’ development as practitioners. The discussion will be augmented by evidence from the literature and the authors’ experiences of implementing IL in the University curriculum, including Webber’s work as a CILASS (Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences) Fellow at the University of Sheffield. They can also be sanctuaries from pandemic and war. Librarians (including the co-authors) have worked in virtual worlds for 15 years (e.g. Webber & Nahl, 2011) and the Community Virtual Library in the 3D virtual world Second Life https://communityvirtuallibrary.org/ exemplifies global connectivity, with volunteers collaborating internationally to enact diversity for information access. A current exhibit, "Social Determinants for Access to Information: Virtual World Library Exhibition" includes 3D rooms filled with resources on racial diversity, gender diversity, issues of changing literacies, digital legacy, confirmation bias, digital citizenship, and the digital divide. Visitors interact with content and share a sense of place and presence through embodiment in the metaverse, providing advantages beyond web platforms such as Zoom. Our poster shares examples of using 3D virtual worlds for librarianship through international collaboration across learning communities. The 3D virtual library is a real space where librarians can offer services such as reference work, exhibits, workshops, conferences and discussions, and embed themselves into virtual spaces without the boundaries of physical space (e.g. Hill, 2016; Hill, 2021). "

Abstract: "Theory of Change (ToC) is a participative approach to evaluating the impact of projects, programmes and initiatives. Librarians and information professionals engaged in change processes, development projects and research studies can use ToC to generate evaluation data and articulate the impact of their activities, working closely with stakeholders such as students, academic staff, teachers and other professionals. The ToC process generates new understandings of how and why project successes have been achieved, and can form the basis of justifications for current and future funding. ToC has been widely used to evaluate the success and impact of projects in a variety of sectors (often community and public sector initiatives), and in educational development (Hart, Dierks-O’Brien & Powell, 2009) including Information Literacy initiatives (McKinney, 2014; McKinney, Jones & Turkington, 2011). In the version of the ToC process used in CILASS projects, stakeholders are asked to identify the drivers for change in the current situation; the longer term impact they envisage the project will have; the intermediate outcomes that the project is expected to achieve; activities that would need to be undertaken to achieve outcomes and enabling factors and resources required to support the project (Hart, Dierks-O’Brien & Powell, 2009). Stakeholders collaboratively design a Theory of Change poster that defines key project indicators and develops a causal narrative between project activities and outcomes. A plan and evaluation framework is then developed from these indicators, and stakeholders design data collection instruments. Connell & Kubisch (1998) have identified that a good ToC should be plausible, doable and testable."
