This is a presentation of social media storytelling tools that were covered in a blog post written for the Web Science and Digital Libraries research group: http://ws-dl.blogspot.com/2017/08/2017-08-11-where-can-we-post-stories.html

Web Archive Collections are Invaluable
Museums, libraries, researchers,
journalists, and other
organizations use tools like
Archive-It to create collections of
archived web pages, or
mementos
Researchers will often create
collections of news articles about
an event for use later.
What happens when someone
wants to use that collection
later?

3. @shawnmjones @WebSciDL 3
There are ~17
Archive-It collections
about human rights
How are they different
from each other?
Which one is best for my
needs?

Social cards are easier for humans to

Why Storytelling With Social Cards Works
9
Social Cards on a platform all present the
same fields in the same locations.
Reading down,
we can easily
watch the story
unfold.

Focusing on Customer Engagement or Corporate
Website Development
11
These tools, while useful for curation are not suitable for the DSA framework because
storytelling is not their primary focus.
12. @shawnmjones @WebSciDL
Focusing on the Present
12
Platforms that only focus on the present versions of links are, by their nature, not suitable for use with
Archived Collections.

Making It Difficult To Share
13
Sharing is key to using a platform for storytelling.
If one can only share with a small group, or if other uses must pay to
see shared content, then the platform is not suitable for sharing
archived collections.

For Want of Automation

APIs in other services allow us to configure the social card and address these issues.

Making It Difficult to Understand the Order of Events
16
If the social card sizes are all different or their order is inconsistent:
• Where does the story start?
• In what direction is the flow? What item is next?
17. @shawnmjones @WebSciDL
Making It Difficult to Understand the Order of Events:
Pinterest
17
Pinterest also does not work with all URIs.
For the next item in
the story, do I look
down or do I look
right?
Pinterest changes
the size of the social
cards based on the
size of the image,
further complicating
one’s understanding
of the flow of the
story.

Candidate Tools for Storytelling with Mementos:
Facebook

Sometimes Facebook fails to generate a social card,
but the API can be used to supply additional
information to the comment in order to overcome this.

21. @shawnmjones @WebSciDL
Candidate Tools for Storytelling with Mementos: Tumblr
21
Tumblr allows one to choose Link as the
type of post, for which it will generate a
social card.
Posts can be tied together with a
hashtag that is specific to a Tumblr blog,
thus creating a collection.

Candidate Tools for Storytelling with Mementos:
Twitter Moments
22
Twitter Moments provides
the ability to tell visually
compelling stories out of
tweets.
Unfortunately, it does not
always generate social
cards, but additional
information can be
supplied via the API to
augment this
shortcoming.

the DSA.
