4. The meaning of genetically modified
food
It is ‘genetically modified’ meaning the genes
have been altered and changed. The foods, in
this process, are developed using genetically
modified organisms (GMO). The organisms
meet with specific changes into their DNA
which are not introduced naturally. The
technique is also referred as ‘gene
technology’ and ‘modern biotechnology’.
5. The habit of using genetically engineered food is on
the rise, since it was first marketed in 1996 because
of the many perceived values, some of which
necessarily include the following:
Pest resistance
Disease control
6. Pest resistance:
Every year farmers and food producers have
to face the growing threat of insect pests
which results in the increased amount of
financial loses and irregularity in food supply.
To counter the problem, farmers rely on
chemical pesticide which is however not
welcomed by consumers because of the
obvious health hazards.
7. Disease control
Fungi, bacteria and different viruses present in
the air affect the plants by exposing them to a
range of diseases. Genetically engineered
plants however can grow without necessarily
being affected by most of these diseases.
