1 Components of Man
Man comprises of three components

     1.1 Ruh
          a. We do not have the knowledge of Ruh or the Soul

                    Surah Al-Isra, Verse 85

Muhsin Khan: And they ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning the Ruh (the Spirit); Say:
"The Ruh (the Spirit): it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of
knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little."

Sahih International: And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the
affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little."

     1.2 Aql
          b. This is the intellect & rationale

     1.3 Badan
          c. The body is made clay

                    Surah al-Araf, Verse 12

Muhsin Khan: (Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I
commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him
You created from clay."

Sahih International: [Allah] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded
you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."

                                 Disease of the Heart - I 4
2 Components of Deen
There are three components of the Deen

Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0001:

One day we were sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) when there
appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes, his hair extraordinarily black.
There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him.

At last he sat with the Apostle (peace be upon him) He knelt before him placed his palms on
his thighs and said: Muhammad, inform me about al-Islam.

                               Disease of the Heart - I 5
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Al-Islam implies
that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad
                                                                           Performed by Badan
is the messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat,
observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the
(House) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the
journey.

He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth.

He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: It amazed us that he would put the
question and then he would himself verify the truth.

He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith).

He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, in
His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, Performed by
and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil. Intellect

He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth.

He (the inquirer) again said: Inform me about al-Ihsan
(performance of good deeds).
                                                                            Performed by Soul
He (the Holy Prophet) said: That you worship Allah as if you are
seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you.

He (the enquirer) again said: Inform me about the hour (of the
Doom).

He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: One who is asked knows no more
than the one who is inquiring (about it).

He (the inquirer) said: Tell me some of its indications.

He (the Holy Prophet) said: That the slave-girl will give birth to her
mistress and master, that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-
herds vying with one another in the construction of magnificent
buildings.

He (the narrator, Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: Then he (the inquirer)
went on his way but I stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for a long
while.

He then, said to me: Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I
replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet)
remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to
instruct you in matters of religion.

NOTE :: If Islam, Iman or Ihsan are mentioned separately, then they refer to the whole religion.
If mentioned separately with the other then refers to the specific meaning. For example, visiting
Toronto and/or Ottawa, visiting Ontario encompasses Toronto, Ottawa

                                 Disease of the Heart - I 6
2.1 Iman
Iman comprises of two below

2.1.1 Statement :: Tawheed of Beleief

                  Heart
                   Emotion

                  Tongue
                   Read Quran
                   Dawah
                   Zikr

                  Limbs
                   Salah

     2.2 Ihsan :: Perfection

       2.2.1 Ihsan in the Quran

                  Surah Yunus, Verse 26
Sahih International: For them who have done good is the best [reward] –and extra. No
darkness will cover their faces, nor humiliation. Those are companions of Paradise; they
      will abide therein eternally.

                  Surah an-Nahl, Verse 128
Sahih International: Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of
      good.

NOTE :: Ihsan varies from moment to moment in any person

                              Disease of the Heart - I 7
2.2.2 Levels of Ihsan

        2.2.2.1 Obligatory Level

            2.2.2.1.1 Pure Intention
o Only for the Sake of Allah

            2.2.2.1.2 Compliance with Sunnah
o Perform Ibadah according to Sunnah and avoid Bidah

        2.2.2.2 Recommended Level
• One’s actions performed in the state of muraqabah, “…if you do no see Him then
    [remember] that He sees you.”

        2.2.2.3 Highest Level
• Performing One’s action in the state mushahadah, “…as if you see Allah.”

                             Disease of the Heart - I 8
3 Tazkiyah

       3.1 Linguistic
   • To clean and purify from something filthy
   • To increase and/or become more in number

       3.2 Technical

        3.2.1 Zakah
   • Purify your wealth
   • Increase your wealth

Surah al-Baqarah 2, Verse 272
Sahih International: Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but
Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, and you
do not spend except seeking the countenance of Allah. And whatever you spend of good – it will
be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

        3.2.2 Tazkiyat al-Nafs
   • Cleanse and purify your soul
   • Nourish your soul with good and praiseworthy characteristics

       3.3 Importance to Cleanse

There is Ikhteelaf in the opinion of Tazkiyat al-Nafs being Fard-ayn or Fard-kifayah. But
consensus is that it has to be addressed. One must learn all the characteristics/disease of the
soul, as well as how to get rid of them.

                                Disease of the Heart - I 9
3.4 How important is it ?

Allah took 11 Oaths to signify the importance of purifying the soul. Highest in the Quran

                     Surah al-Shams, Verses 1 – 10

091.001 Muhsin Khan: And by the sun and its brightness;

091.002 Muhsin Khan: And by the moon as it follows it (the sun);

091.003 Muhsin Khan: And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness;

091.004 Muhsin Khan: And by the night as it conceals it (the sun);

091.005 Muhsin Khan: And by the heaven and Him Who built it;

091.006 Muhsin Khan: And by the earth and Him Who spread it,

091.007 Muhsin Khan: And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected
him in proportion;

091.008 Muhsin Khan: Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;

091.009 Muhsin Khan: Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs
all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous
good deeds).

091.010 Muhsin Khan: And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah
has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or
by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).

3.5 Less Grief with Controlled Nafs

In this life, the person who purifies his soul will find himself free of grief and depression

                     Surah Yunus, Verses 62 – 63

Sahih International: Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning
them, nor will they grieve –

Sahih International: Those who believed and were fearing Allah.

                                  Disease of the Heart - I 10
4 The Traps of Shaytan

4.1 Why did Allah create evil ?

If there was no evil we would not know what good is. Moreover, in the absence of evil there
would be no test ! And in the absence of tests humankind would, like Angels, be forever obedient
to Allah. Yet the Angels were created before man, and they have continued to obey Allah from
that time without choice. Rather, Allah wanted to create Man and Jinn giving them a choice
between obedience and disobedience

     4.2 Shaytan’s Ploy

From the time Adam was created. Shaytan is in active battle with us, who needs to actively
fought to be defeated.

                   Shirk / Kufr

                   Bidah

                   Major Sins

                   Minor Sins

                   Distraction with Permissible Acts

Occupying one with Good Deeds of Lesser Rewards

     4.3 Last Ploy

Once all of the above fails he uses others by entrapping them in the sin of back-biting or
slandering against the believer.

                                Disease of the Heart - I 11
5 Disease & Vices of the Heart
Purification involves two stages
   • Firstly, cleansing the heart of its vices and diseases
   • Secondly, increasing the good characteristics and virtues of the heart

To achieve the first step of cleansing ourselves from the vices and diseases of the heart and soul
we need to consider the various diseases and their causes.

       5.1 Anger - Ghadab

   • No one is free of anger
   • Anger per se is neither good nor bad
   • Certain types of anger are sinful and certain consequences of anger are blameworthy
   • Excessive anger is blameworthy as it prevents the afflicted person from thinking straight
   • Excessive anger overtakes your intellect

        5.1.1 Causes of Anger
                   Internal Causes

                   External Causes

        5.1.2 Effects of Anger
                   General External
          o Change in physical movements
          o Facial expression

                   Tongue
          o Swearing
          o Cursing

                   Limbs
          o Beating
          o Breaking
          o Killing

                   Heart
          o Jealousy
          o Hatred
          o Malice

                                Disease of the Heart - I 12
5.1.3 Anger Management

• Allah’s Remembrance
• Get Acquainted with Virtues of Forgiveness & Forbearance
• Fearing Allah’s Punishment
• Being wary of feeling enmity and revenge
• Reflecting on the outward manifestation of anger and its ugly nature
• Questioning that which entices his rage to pursue revenge
• Appreciating that people avoid those with short temper
• Seeking refuge of Allah
• Changing his physical state
• Increasing invocations and supplications to Allah

                             Disease of the Heart - I 13
5.2 Backbiting & Slander

        5.2.1 Ghibah

           5.2.1.1 Definition & Clarification

Ghibah , from the Arabic root word “ghayb” [from gh-ya-ba, which means to be absent; hidden
remote; unseen; etc]. This is because often, when a person backbites another, he does so when
the latter is not present.

Ghibah is a truthful statement that is said in the person’s absence and he would dislike to have
that said about him; were this statement to be false, it would be called buhtan or slandering.

Backbiting is the only thoughtless utter of a few words, light on the tongue but weighty in sin. It
could lead a person to Hellfire.

           5.2.1.2 Shari Definition

Sahih Muslim, Chapter 18, Book 032, Number 6265:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know what
is backbiting? They (the Companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Thereupon he
(the Holy Prophet) said: Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he
does not like. It was said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that
failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If (that failing) is actually found (in
him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander.

NOTE :: There is no justification of this Sin. Prophet explained that backbiting is when someone
is mentioning the real faults of a person. And what is even worse us to state falsehood with
regards to a believe and this is a slander.

           5.2.1.3 Consequence

               5.2.1.3.1 Quran

                    Surah Hujurat, Verse 12

Muhsin Khan: O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And
spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?
You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts
repentance, Most Merciful.

mixed in it. She said: I imitated a man before him (out of disgrace). He said: I do not like that I
imitate anyone even if I should get such and such.

and if Allah searches for the fault of anyone, He disgraces him in the open for everyone to see,

5.2.3 Prevention & Cure

5.2.3.1 Reflecting on Allah and His Messenger’s Speech

                    Surah al-Zukhruf 43, Verse 80

Muhsin Khan: Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsel? (Yes
We do) and Our Messengers (appointed angels in charge of mankind) are by them, to record.

Sahih International: Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private
conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.

                    Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 158
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not
hurt his neighbor and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest
generously and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should talk what is good or keep
quiet." - Seek forgiveness from the transgressed person

                    Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 83
The Prophet said, "Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds,
and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 481
It has been related on the authority of Sahl ibn Sa'd, that the Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever can
guarantee what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him the Garden."

                    Al-Tirmidhi Hadith - 468

brother, Allah will shield his face against the Fire on the Day of Judgment.

           5.2.3.2 Introspection

Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6251
Abu Huraira. reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know who
is poor? They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who has
neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The poor of my Umma would be
he who would come on the Day of Resurrecton with prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would
find himself bankrupt on that day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he
hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully consumed the wealth
of others and shed the blood of others and beat others, and his virtues would be credited to the
account of one (who suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account,
then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be thrown in the Hell-Fire.

                                 Disease of the Heart - I 16
5.2.3.3 Righteous Companionship

Shahih Bukhari, Volume 3 Number 314
Narrated Abu Musa: Allah's Apostle said, "The example of a good companion (who sits with you)
in comparison with a bad one, is I like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or
furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows
would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof."

           5.2.3.4 Strong Resolve
Make your own personal Oath. Example is Rasul ibn Wahb. He said, “I swore an oath that for
every time I backbite someone, I would fast a day. This just wore me out, since I would backbite
and fast. Then I resolved that for every time I backbite someone, I would spend one silver coin
in charity. Then for the love of money, I gave up backbiting”

        5.2.4 Exception

          d. To advise one in authority regarding the neglect of a person in office, etc.
   5. To expose an open Fahishah
   6. In order to describe or identify an Individual

Example :: Sahih Muslim, Book 9, Number 3527:
Fatima bint Qais narrates :: Mu'awiya and Abu'l-Jahm (Allah be pleased with them) were among
those who had given me the proposal of marriage. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be
upon him) said: Mu'awiya is destitute and in poor condition and Abu'l- Jahm is very harsh with
women (or he beats women, or like that), you should take Usama b. Zaid (as your husband).

5.3 Namimah – Tale Carrying

        5.3.1 Definition & Clarification

This is to transmit the statements of some people to others intending to cause friction and enmity
between them

Ali (R) mentioned that “The tale-carrier, in one hour, creates the mischief of many months”.

        5.3.2 Hadith

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 717
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, 'Beware of suspicion, for it is the worst of false tales
and don't look for the other's faults and don't spy and don't hate each other, and don't desert
(cut your relations with) one another O Allah's slaves, be brothers!"

Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 0189
It is reported from Hudhaifa that news reached him (the Holy Prophet) that a certain man carried
tales. Upon this Hudhaifa remarked: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) saying:
The tale-bearer shall not enter Paradise.

Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6306
'Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that Muhammad (may peace be upon him) said: Should I inform
you that slandering, that is in fact a tale- carrying which creates dissension amongst people,
(and) he (further) said: The person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie tells a
lie until lie is recorded as a liar.

5.3.3 Understanding the Early Generations

           5.3.3.1 Umar (R)
When a man came to Umar (R), the great Caliph, to inform him of what someone had said about
another person, he (Umar [R]) said, “If you wish we can verify this matter. If you have lied then
you are from this ayah of the Quran: ‘O you who believe, when a sinner comes to you with news,
verify it’, and if you have spoken the truth then you are from this ayah, ‘the backbiter who goes
about slandering’. Alternatively, if you wish we can pardon you”. The man promptly replied that
he would prefer to be pardoned and would never repeat this sin again

Umar (R) understood that if what the person had related was true, he would be tale carrier - and
this is a sin – and if he had lied, he would have been a fasiq (a corrupt sinner) whose statements
would need to be verified.

           5.3.3.2 Al-Hasan al-Basri
Al-Hasan al-Basri one said, “If someone comes to you with the statements of other then know
that he will go to others with you statements.”

   5. Avoid Suspicion
   6. Desist from spreading it further

         5.3.5 Slandering of Aisha (R) [Ummul Mu’minin]
Aisha was traveling with her husband Muhammad and some of his followers. She left camp in the
morning to search for her lost necklace; when she returned, she found that the company had
broken camp and left without her. She waited patiently for half a day, until she was rescued by a
man named Safwan and taken to rejoin the caravan.

Malicious tongues started to wag, claiming that she must have been having an affair with Safwan.
Some urged Muhammad to divorce his wife.

Prophet then received a revelation (Surah Nur) directing that adultery be proven by four
eyewitnesses, rather than simply inferred from opportunity. One passage of the Qur'an, "Verily!
They who spread the slander are a gang among you..." (), is usually taken as a rebuke to those
who slandered Aisha.

   1. Punishment of Adultery
         a. Never married

We do not have the knowledge of Ruh or the Soul Surah Al-Isra, Verse 85 Muhsin Khan: And they ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning the Ruh (the Spirit); Say: "The Ruh (the Spirit): it is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little." Sahih International: And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little." 1.2 Aql b. This is the intellect & rationale 1.3 Badan c. The body is made clay Surah al-Araf, Verse 12 Muhsin Khan: (Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth. He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: It amazed us that he would put the question and then he would himself verify the truth. He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, Performed by and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil. Performed by Soul He (the Holy Prophet) said: That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you. He (the enquirer) again said: Inform me about the hour (of the Doom). He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring (about it). He (the inquirer) said: Tell me some of its indications. He (the Holy Prophet) said: That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and master, that you will find barefooted, destitute goat- herds vying with one another in the construction of magnificent buildings. He (the narrator, Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: Then he (the inquirer) went on his way but I stayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for a long while. He then, said to me: Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instruct you in matters of religion. NOTE :: If Islam, Iman or Ihsan are mentioned separately, then they refer to the whole religion. • 11. 4 The Traps of Shaytan 4.1 Why did Allah create evil ? If there was no evil we would not know what good is. Moreover, in the absence of evil there would be no test ! And in the absence of tests humankind would, like Angels, be forever obedient to Allah. Yet the Angels were created before man, and they have continued to obey Allah from that time without choice. Rather, Allah wanted to create Man and Jinn giving them a choice between obedience and disobedience 4.2 Shaytan’s Ploy From the time Adam was created. Shaytan is in active battle with us, who needs to actively fought to be defeated. • 14. 5.2 Backbiting & Slander 5.2.1 Ghibah 5.2.1.1 Definition & Clarification Ghibah , from the Arabic root word “ghayb” [from gh-ya-ba, which means to be absent; hidden remote; unseen; etc]. This is because often, when a person backbites another, he does so when the latter is not present. Ghibah is a truthful statement that is said in the person’s absence and he would dislike to have that said about him; were this statement to be false, it would be called buhtan or slandering. Backbiting is the only thoughtless utter of a few words, light on the tongue but weighty in sin. It could lead a person to Hellfire. 5.2.1.2 Shari Definition Sahih Muslim, Chapter 18, Book 032, Number 6265: Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know what is backbiting? They (the Companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like. It was said to him: What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander. NOTE :: There is no justification of this Sin. Prophet explained that backbiting is when someone is mentioning the real faults of a person. And what is even worse us to state falsehood with regards to a believe and this is a slander. 5.2.1.3 Consequence 5.2.1.3.1 Quran Surah Hujurat, Verse 12 Muhsin Khan: O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. Disease of the Heart - I 14
  • 15. 5.2.1.3.2 Hadith Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 4860: Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: When I was taken up to heaven I passed by people who had nails of copper and were scratching their faces and their breasts. I said: Who are these people, Gabriel? He replied: They are those who were given to back biting and who aspersed people's honour. Abu Dawud, Book 41, Number 4858: Narrated Sa'id ibn Zayd: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The most prevalent kind of usury is going to lengths in talking unjustly against a Muslim's honour. Abu Dawud , Book 41, Number 4857: Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: I said to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him): It is enough for you in Safiyyah that she is such and such (the other version than Musaddad's has:) meaning that she was short-statured. He replied; You have said a word which would change the sea if it were mixed in it. She said: I imitated a man before him (out of disgrace). He said: I do not like that I imitate anyone even if I should get such and such. 5.2.1.3.3 FYI Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 41, Number 4862, Sahih Sunan Al Tirmidhi (1655), Ibin Hiban, Hasan by Al Albani, Ghaybah al-Muram, 420 Narrated AbuBarzah al-Aslami: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: O community of people, who believed by their tongue, and belief did not enter their hearts, do not back-bite Muslims, and do not search for their faults, for if anyone searches for their faults, Allah will search for his fault, and if Allah searches for the fault of anyone, He disgraces him in the open for everyone to see, even if he hid it in the innermost part of his house. 5.2.2 Why People Backbite ? 1. Weakness of Faith and lack of Piety 2. To vent his anger 3. To fit in 4. Personal dislike 5. For self-purification 6. To honor and elevate oneself 7. Jealousy & Envy 8. • 16. 5.2.3 Prevention & Cure 5.2.3.1 Reflecting on Allah and His Messenger’s Speech Surah al-Zukhruf 43, Verse 80 Muhsin Khan: Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsel? (Yes We do) and Our Messengers (appointed angels in charge of mankind) are by them, to record. Sahih International: Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording. Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 158 Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his guest generously and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should talk what is good or keep quiet." - Seek forgiveness from the transgressed person Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 83 The Prophet said, "Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink." Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 76, Number 481 It has been related on the authority of Sahl ibn Sa'd, that the Prophet (saw) said, "Whoever can guarantee what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him the Garden." Al-Tirmidhi Hadith - 468 Narrated AbudDarda' :: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who defends the honour of a brother, Allah will shield his face against the Fire on the Day of Judgment. 5.2.3.2 Introspection Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6251 Abu Huraira. reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know who is poor? They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The poor of my Umma would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrecton with prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would find himself bankrupt on that day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully consumed the wealth of others and shed the blood of others and beat others, and his virtues would be credited to the account of one (who suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account, then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be thrown in the Hell-Fire. Disease of the Heart - I 16
  • 17. 5.2.3.3 Righteous Companionship Shahih Bukhari, Volume 3 Number 314 Narrated Abu Musa: Allah's Apostle said, "The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is I like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof." 5.2.3.4 Strong Resolve Make your own personal Oath. Example is Rasul ibn Wahb. He said, “I swore an oath that for every time I backbite someone, I would fast a day. This just wore me out, since I would backbite and fast. Then I resolved that for every time I backbite someone, I would spend one silver coin in charity. Then for the love of money, I gave up backbiting” 5.2.4 Exception 1. To Complain Oppression 2. To Return to Order or Put to Rights 3. When Seeking a Fatwa Regarding the Issue 4. To offer Counsel, Advice or a Warning a. Warning against Weakness in Hadith b. Counsel Regarding Character of a Person i. Marriage ii. Getting into Business Partnership iii. Safekeeping something with someone iv. Doing business with someone v. Becoming a neighbor of someone c. To advise student of knowledge d. To advise one in authority regarding the neglect of a person in office, etc. 5. To expose an open Fahishah 6. In order to describe or identify an Individual Example :: Sahih Muslim, Book 9, Number 3527: Fatima bint Qais narrates :: Mu'awiya and Abu'l-Jahm (Allah be pleased with them) were among those who had given me the proposal of marriage. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Mu'awiya is destitute and in poor condition and Abu'l- Jahm is very harsh with women (or he beats women, or like that), you should take Usama b. Zaid (as your husband). Disease of the Heart - I 17
  • 18. 5.3 Namimah – Tale Carrying 5.3.1 Definition & Clarification This is to transmit the statements of some people to others intending to cause friction and enmity between them Ali (R) mentioned that “The tale-carrier, in one hour, creates the mischief of many months”. 5.3.2 Hadith Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Number 717 Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, 'Beware of suspicion, for it is the worst of false tales and don't look for the other's faults and don't spy and don't hate each other, and don't desert (cut your relations with) one another O Allah's slaves, be brothers!" Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 0189 It is reported from Hudhaifa that news reached him (the Holy Prophet) that a certain man carried tales. Upon this Hudhaifa remarked: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) saying: The tale-bearer shall not enter Paradise. Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6306 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that Muhammad (may peace be upon him) said: Should I inform you that slandering, that is in fact a tale- carrying which creates dissension amongst people, (and) he (further) said: The person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie tells a lie until lie is recorded as a liar. • 19. 5.3.3 Understanding the Early Generations 5.3.3.1 Umar (R) When a man came to Umar (R), the great Caliph, to inform him of what someone had said about another person, he (Umar [R]) said, “If you wish we can verify this matter. If you have lied then you are from this ayah of the Quran: ‘O you who believe, when a sinner comes to you with news, verify it’, and if you have spoken the truth then you are from this ayah, ‘the backbiter who goes about slandering’. Alternatively, if you wish we can pardon you”. The man promptly replied that he would prefer to be pardoned and would never repeat this sin again Umar (R) understood that if what the person had related was true, he would be tale carrier - and this is a sin – and if he had lied, he would have been a fasiq (a corrupt sinner) whose statements would need to be verified. 5.3.3.2 Al-Hasan al-Basri Al-Hasan al-Basri one said, “If someone comes to you with the statements of other then know that he will go to others with you statements.” Disease of the Heart - I 19
  • 20. 5.3.4 Dealing with Namimah 1. Not Believe in the tale 2. Counsel & Advice 3. Hate the Sin & Perpetrator 4. Maintain the best of Expectations 5. Avoid Suspicion 6. Desist from spreading it further 5.3.5 Slandering of Aisha (R) [Ummul Mu’minin] Aisha was traveling with her husband Muhammad and some of his followers. She left camp in the morning to search for her lost necklace; when she returned, she found that the company had broken camp and left without her. She waited patiently for half a day, until she was rescued by a man named Safwan and taken to rejoin the caravan. Malicious tongues started to wag, claiming that she must have been having an affair with Safwan. Some urged Muhammad to divorce his wife. Prophet then received a revelation (Surah Nur) directing that adultery be proven by four eyewitnesses, rather than simply inferred from opportunity. One passage of the Qur'an, "Verily! They who spread the slander are a gang among you..." (), is usually taken as a rebuke to those who slandered Aisha. 5.3.5.1 Main Subjects in Surah Nur 1. Punishment of Adultery a. Never married b. Married / Widowed / Divorced c. Punishment of Failed Witness d. Spousal Accusation of Adultery 2. Abu Bakr (R) rebuked by Allah 3. Lower you Gaze 4. Guard your private parts 5. Not display the adornment "except what is apparent of it" 6. Draw the khimar to cover the jayb. 7. Not display the adornment except to the people listed in the ayah. 8.
