2. THOMAS JEFFERSON’S BIRTH AND EARLY LIFE
Thomas Jefferson was born on
April 13, 1743 in Albemarle County,
Colony of Virginia, to Peter and Jane
Jefferson.
Tom was the third oldest of 10
children. Two of his siblings died at
birth.
At age 2, Tom’s Uncle died so his
family moved into their house on
Tuckahoe Plantation to care for his
children, Tom’s four cousins.
At age nine, his family moved back
to Shadwell, their land in Albemarle
County,

read so much.
Tom also
loved to write.
Young Tom
studied violin and
languages, such
as Latin, Greek,
and French with
Reverend William
Douglas at Dover
Creek for five
years.
Tom studied law while working
with George Wythe and became
a
lawyer in 1767.
At age 16, Tom
attended The College
of William and Mary
in Williamsburg,
Virginia.
Besides his studies at
W&M, Tom enjoyed horse
races, card games, and fox
hunts.

4. THOMAS JEFFERSON’S LIFE AFTER COLLEGE
For seven years Tom
worked on designing
and building Monticello,
that meant “little
mountain” in Italian.
In 1772, Tom married a
widow, Martha Wayles
Skelton. Tom and Martha
shared a love of music.
They had 6 children but
only 2 made it, Patsy &
Maria. Martha died very
young at age 33, leaving
Tom heartbroken.
Tom loved to play
violin, planting in his
garden, playing with
Dick, his pet
Mocking bird
and his
grizzly
cubs.
5. As a lawyer, Tom served in the Virginia
House of Burgesses.
Tom then served in the Virginia House
of Delegates when he was lawyer.
Tom worked with George Washington,
Ben Franklin, John Adams, Alexander
Hamilton, etc.

6. Tom was the author and a signer of the
Declaration of Independence – 1776.
He was Governor of Virginia in 1779 -1781.
He was United States Minister to France.
He was the first Secretary of State during
George Washington’s presidency.
He was elected vice president under John
Adams in1797 - 1801.
Tom also was 3rd president of the United
States from 1800 to 1809.
As President, Tom sent Louis and Clark on
their quest out west, where they found the
first mammoth remains.
Tom created the University of Virginia in
Charlottesville, Virginia.

7. THOMAS JEFFERSON’S IMPACT ON THE WORLD
Thomas Jefferson was a
Founding Father of the United
States of America, the country we
live in.
Tom invented the Moldboard
Plow, Architect Table, and the
Wine Dumbwaiter.
In the Declaration of
Independence he came up with
the idea that all people are created
equal and the government should
do what the citizens want.
Another is that he made UVA
where a lot of people go for
college because, it has great
education.
8. THOMAS JEFFERSON’S DEATH
Thomas Jefferson
died on July 4,
1826, at age 83, of
natural causes at
his home
Monticello , in
Charlottesville,
Virginia.
It was the 50th
anniversary of the
Declaration of
Independence.
9. CONNECTIONS TO HADDONFIELD
The Haddonfield Public Library was modeled after Monticello.
Fry – Jefferson Map (1753) hanging on the wall in the foyer of
Monticello, shows Haddonfield’s location in New Jersey.
