2. • An ulcer is a lesion that develops on the skin or mucous
membranes of the body. There are various types of ulcer that may
differ in pain and severity. Ulcers, if neglected for long, can cause
some serious medical complications.
• Pressure ulcers, commonly known as bedsores, are the most
common type of ulcer. They result from the skin getting infected
from pressure and friction of the body with the mattress.
• Shahzad Pirzada in collaboration with Genadyne Biotechnologies
Inc. has developed the MNS 400 Alternating Pressure Relief System.
It provides the much needed relief and works as a solution for your
pressure ulcer.
3. • Pressure ulcer occurs due to the pressure applied on the soft
tissue. This restricts the flow of flood to that part where the
pressure is being applied. People who do not move about much
or are bed ridden are most susceptible to getting this form of
ulcer.
• Certain other factors like climatic conditions, protein
deficiency, diabetes, or diseases that may lead to reduced
blood flow to the infected region, certain medications being
taken by the patient, etc. also may lead to pressure ulcer.
• The most common sites for pressure ulcers are
heels, hips, sacrum, elbows, knees, and ankles, among others.
Pressure ulcers are curable if detected early but they become
very difficult to manage in the advanced stage.
4. • In the following section we shall look at the types, causes, and
measures that can be taken to treat pressure ulcer. We shall also
look at how Shahzad Pirzada’s air cell mattresses can prove to be
effective protection against pressure ulcers.
1. Different Stages of Pressure Ulcer
• Stage I--- The affected area shows some redness and it may be
different from the rest of the skin- could be painful, warmer,
cooler, softer, or firmer. There may be a little swelling but the
redness is often hard to detect in people with darker skin.
• Stage II--- Partial loss of skin on the affected area results in this
stage of ulcer. Some blisters can also be seen around the skin.
5. • Stage III—There is full tissue loss in this stage. However, bone,
tissue and muscles are not exposed.
• Stage IV—There is full thickness tissue loss in this stage with
exposed bone, tendons, and muscles. The wounds are shallow and
may require surgery.
2. Causes of Pressure Ulcer
• As the name suggests the most common cause of pressure ulcer is
‘pressure’ itself. Compression caused by the force of the bone
against a surface leads to destruction of muscle cells.
• This usually occurs when the patient is in the same position for a
long a time. Reduced blood flow leads to skin tissue damage which
can lead to necrosis if left unattended and untreated for long.
6. • It is not only that this type of ulcer solely results from the friction
caused by the infected part on some surface. It may also result
from pressure applied on the skin by external agents like
wheelchair, braces, etc.
• Climate is another important factor that may hasten the
disintegration of tissue and cause pressure ulcer. The temperature
and moisture of the skin in contact with an external agent can also
contribute to the development of pressure ulcer.
• Moisture on the skin causes the skin to become soft. The skin then
becomes more prone to the effects of friction generated by
mattresses or medical equipments like wheelchair.
7. 3. Conclusion
• Pressure ulcer may happen due to reduced blood supply. One
common example to better understand this situation is that dull
ache experienced by healthy individuals while sitting in the same
position for a long time.
• Shahzad Pirzada’s MNS 400 Alternating Pressure Relief System
mattress reduces the pressure of the patient’s body against the
mattress.
• This system featuring a variety of unique qualities that redistribute
the pressure exerted by the patient’s body to decrease friction and
maintain an adequate supply of blood to the affected areas.
