3. Climate:
 wide range of seasonal adaptability
 cool season crop
 moderately frost - tolerant
 Temperature recognized as influencing yield
 Young plants grow best at a temperature of
240C
 later growth is favored at 180C.
 Tuber production reaches a maximum at 200C
 at 300C tuber production stops entirely.

4. Soil:
 best on deep, fertile, sandy lo clay loams
 with good water retention capacity
 relatively weak, shallow root system
 in the soil limit rooting depth
 restricts water availability to the plant in dry
Periods.
 soil compaction can reduce potato yields

tubers.

5. Manures and Fertilizers
 Potato has a high nutrient requirement
 Green manuring is beneficial
 Well rotted FYM at 30 t/ha should be incorporated

6. Spacing:
 In hilly areas potatoes are spaced at 60 x 30 cm
 Tubers are planted in furrows

 Distance between ridges is kept at 45-60 cm.

7. Seed Rate:
Seed rate is 800-1000 kg/ha is generally recommended.
Irrigation:
Potatoes need frequent irrigation
1st irrigation should be given immediately after
sowing
2nd irrigation at one week intervals
After tuber formation irrigation is decreased.
Should be stopped a few days before harvesting

8. Harvesting:
 In developed countries harvested by mechanically
 In pakistan harvested by manually
 Care must be taken that tubers are not injured
 during the process. After harvesting, the crop
 should be kept in the shade

9. Yield:
 The average yield of potato is 20-25 tones/ha
