JAMES WEB
TELESCOPE
Some where something incredible is waiting to be known.

Introduction
01
INTRODUCTION
• The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space
telescope designed primarily to conduct infrared
astronomy. As the largest optical telescope in space,
its greatly improved infrared resolution and
sensitivity allow it to view objects too early, distant,
or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This is
expected to enable a broad range of investigations
across the fields of astronomy and cosmology, such
as observation of the first stars and the formation of
the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric
characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.
• Goals: The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared observatory that will
complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer
wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity.
• Launch Date: Dec. 25, 2021 | 12:20 UTC
• Science Targets: Our Solar System | Beyond Our Solar System
• Type :Orbiter
• Agency: NASA
• Webb will study every phase in the history of our universe, ranging from the first
luminous glows after the big bang, to the formation of solar systems capable of
supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own solar system. It will
build on the Hubble Space Telescope's discoveries

WHAT IF WE USE ONE
MIRROR?
• JWST's primary mirror is a 6.5 m (21 ft.)-diameter
gold-coated beryllium reflector with a collecting
area of 25.4 m2 (273 sq. ft.). If it were built as a
single large mirror, this would have been too large
for existing launch vehicles. The mirror is therefore
composed of 18 hexagonal segments which
unfolded after the telescope was launched
SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS
• NIRCam (Near Infrared Camera) (0.6 μm) TO (5 μm).
• NIRSpec (Near Infrared Spectrograph) performs spectroscopy over the same wavelength range.
• MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) measures the mid-to-long-infrared wavelength range from 5 to 27
μm.
• FGS/NIRISS (Fine Guidance Sensor and Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph),
LOCATION AND ORBIT
• JWST operates in a halo orbit, circling
around a point in space known as the
Sun–Earth L2 Lagrange point,
approximately 1,500,000 km beyond
Earth's orbit around the Sun.
L2 is short-hand for the second Lagrange
Point, a wonderful accident of gravity and
orbital mechanics, and the perfect place to
park the Webb telescope in space. There
are five so-called "Lagrange Points" - areas
where gravity from the sun and Earth
balance the orbital motion of a satellite.
UNFOLDING OF TELESCOPE
• Gregory L. Robinson, Webb program director at NASA Headquarters. Said “This is
the first time a NASA-led mission has ever attempted to complete a complex
sequence to unfold an observatory in space – a remarkable feat for our team, NASA,
and the world.”
• On Jan. 24, 2022, the mission team fired Webb’s thrusters and inserted the space
telescope into orbit around the Sun at the second Lagrange point, or L2, its final
destination, nearly 1 million miles from Earth.
