Specifically, the governor is looking for recommendations about whether or not to make cell phone use while driving illegal in the state of Ohio. This includes all aspects of cell phone use among drivers—in instances of private as well as public transportation. Task: As members of this task force, your group must submit a two-page report (based on credible evidence) to the governor arguing why cell phone use while driving should or should not be prohibited in Ohio.

- Students should be in the same groups from the previous week.If there is not at least one laptop per group, rearrange groups trying to keep no more than 5 students per group.
- Welcome Students to week 2 of the Information Literacy series in the Oiler Experience.Introduce yourself (name, where you work, and what you do)Remind Students that last week they were given a Performance Task and today we will be looking at ways to gather information and analyze the credibility of different sources. These sources will then be used to prepare a 2 page group paper responding to the performance task.
- Here is a copy of the performance task. You should also have a copy on the handout which was distributed to you last week. In order to focus your research today, please take a minute to re-read the performance task.
- When you begin searching for information for a report, where do you start? Many people will go to an internet search engine (like Google) in order to find information quickly. However when doing academic research (the kind your professors are looking for here at UF), the best starting place is one of the library databases. These databases contain information that is not available freely on the internet. UF and many other University libraries pay for access to these databases which contain scholarly/timely/credible/academic articles.
- There are some obvious benefits to Internet Searches.As we mentioned earlier, you get your results very quickly.You often will have MANY results to choose from. The results can be from as recently as a few hours ago. Another benefit is that the simplicity of the language makes it easier to start learning about the topic.Unfortunately there are also some drawbacks to Internet Search Engine Results.First, you often do not get the full text of the article.More importantly the reliability and credibility of the sources can vary greatly.A typical search will yield these types of sources: Magazines & Newspaper articles, wiki articles, blogs, advocacy and personal websites.
- When using Academic Search Complete and other library databases you will find several benefits that you do not have with Internet Search Engines.One advantage is that you can access the full text of the article, so you can read it in its entirety.Another advantage is that you will learn the terms used in the field, because those are the terms used in these scholarly articles. Granted this can make for a more challenging read when you are just beginning to learn about the field. However this is an important step in becoming proficient in your major and in mastering the art of academic study.Library Database Searches yield thes types of resources: Journal Articles, Conference proceedings, academic research.
- In other words you can classify your sources in terms of overall crediblity. As this slide shows Journals are more credible than blogs. There is a range of credibility for the sources in between. Within each catagory there will also be some sources which are more credible than others. For example: A newspaper such as the Wall Street Journal holds more credibility than The National Inquirer.
