Well one reason we do this is because the world is changing. We have all heard about the different statistics about the top jobs in 10 years from now don’t even exist today. Well long before those predictions, in 1970 Alvin Toffler published a book called Future Shock where he predicted much of what is going on today. In fact, he argued that “tomorrow’s illiterate will not be the many who can’t read; he will be the man who has not learned how to learn.” Now what he is really talking about is the need to be a lifelong learner. And a great deal has been discussed about the skills and abilities our students need to be successful in the 21 st century (see http://www.p21.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=254&Itemid=120 ) But on a real basic level we can all think about how much the world has changed in the past 10-15 years.
