At this point, most businesses have tuned in and ramped up their content marketing
efforts, with many even churning out fresh content daily. But your focus shouldn’t be solely
on publishing large quantities of content. In fact, top content marketers know its even more
important to consider the quality of your content, as better, more in-depth pieces of
content are more likely to be shared than generic 400-word blog posts.
Recently, Venngage surveyed over 140 different content experts to better understand their
tactics for creating compelling, shareable content—and after taking a look at the tips in their
awesome infographic ourselves, we noticed some recurring themes and trends that
emerged. We’ve compiled these top content marketing tips here to help you boost
audience engagement with your content and extend its reach:

1. Plan Ahead.
Effective content marketing can’t take place without the creation of a well thought out
strategy. Take the time to plan out the content you want to create and determine the
platforms each piece is best suited for. Experts recommend developing an editorial calendar
as far in advance as a quarter at a time—this way, the “next steps” of content creation are on
your mind well in advance of publication, and you can keep your entire team in the loop.

2. Focus on the Customer.
One thing effective content marketing is not? It’s definitely not flooding your audiences’
newsfeeds and inboxes with self-promotional materials. Leaders in the content marketing
space understand that branded content needs to add value to readers’ lives, and should use
it to speak to the interests of their potential customers and solve their biggest problems.

3. Quality over Quantity.
We mentioned this earlier, but it’s so important that it needs to be stated again. Top content
marketers know that businesses should focus their efforts on producing quality content over
creating it with quantity in mind. Videos, infographics, and data-driven eBooks are great
formats to spend time building out as readers are more likely to want to share them across
their own networks.

4. Remember.
They’re Human. An easy thing to forget is that the consumers you’re writing your content to
attract and convert are human! The most shareable content is created in an effort to start a
conversation with the people you’re trying to reach, so develop materials that tell a story or
spark interaction. You can even get your audience involved in the content development
process by crowdsourcing the topics they want to learn more about.
