INSPIRATION FOR OUR
MUSIC VIDEO
SIMILARITIES & DIFFERENCES
‘I GOT U’ BY DUKE DUMONT
POINT-OF-VIEW STYLE
‘I Got U’ ‘All to You’
POINT-OF-VIEW STYLE
NOTIONS OF LOOKING
(VOYEURISM)
• This is an interesting style to present notions of
looking because they come from the perspective
of the person behind the camera showing the
notions of looking in admiration and love for the
character shown in the shot
• The notion of looking form the point of view
shots in ‘I got U’ are clearly of a sexual nature
which is displayed through how the girl in the
video responds when she is looked at and when
she leads him to he room to engage in sexual
activity. This conforms to the Goodwin’s theory
because here is a literal element of looking
through the use of the point of view shots, but
also because of the reference to voyeurism
towards women in a sexual nature that is a
popular feature in music videos of all genres.
• The voyeurism in our music video however
subverts Goodwin’s theory because it doesn't’t
display voyeurism in the style of looking at a
woman, it demonstrates a admiration/love
between friends as the character behind the
camera watches on in admiration for their friend.
LOCATION SHOTS
The main difference between the two videos is that ‘I got U’
takes more natural setting showing the characters to be in a
paradise like setting, perhaps in the Caribbean, whilst our music
video takes on a more urban setting, mainly around the streets
of central London
• Both videos display a character being portrayed in
different shots, especially in close ups
• Use of close ups conforms to Goodwin’s theory that
‘There is often a demand for a lot of close-ups of the
main artist or vocalist from the record company to
establish the artist on screen and identify them with
the music’
• Our music video conforms to Goodwin's theory that:
There is often a demand for a lot of close-ups of the
main artist or vocalist from the record company to
establish the artist on screen and identify them with
the music’ as the main artist/vocalist is shown the
most on screen, often during close ups making it
clear to the audience that he is the central character
and vocalist.
• ‘I got U’ however subverts this theory because the
main vocalist is not shown within the video, it only
follows characters that represent the story line of a
virtual reality that you experience when you wear a
better-than-life helmet.
IMPROVEMENTS TO MAKE OUR VIDEO MORE SIMILAR
• The point of view style in our
music video tuned out to not be
nearly as smooth as that of Duke
Dumont's, this is mainly because
initially we did not have any
stabilizing equipment for our
DSLR camera and acquired one
far too late into production.
• Another improvement would be
to perhaps try filming with a
different camera, fro example a
‘Go Pro’ or a camera of similar
style that would have provide
clearer point of view style, with
smoother shots in correlation
with movement of the person
holding the camera.
REFERENCES TO ‘HAVING FUN’/ FRIENDS’
More-so in ‘I got U’ than in our video, but in our
video there is a small scene where we see the artist
laughing and joking with his friends
‘I Got U’ ‘All to You’
MISE-EN-SCENE: LIGHTING
Similar in the way both videos use
natural light
Similarity Difference
We used a lot of night
filming in the production
of our video so a lot of
artificial lighting is used
