ENGLISH
LANGUAGE
LANGUAGE
 "A language consists of
symbols that convey
meaning, plus rules for
combining those symbols,
that can be used to
generate an infinite variety
of messages."
(Thomson Wadsworth, 2007)
SOCIETY
 A human society is
a group of people
involved in
persistent interpersonal
relationships, or a large
social grouping sharing
the same geographical
or social territory,
typically subject to the
same political authority
and dominant cultural
expectations.
 Study of language in
relation to the society.
 Study of society in
relation with language.
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
SOCIOLOGY OF
LANGUAGE
SOCIAL MEDIA:
 Social media is the
interaction among
people in which they
create, share or
exchange information
and ideas in virtual
communities
and networks.
 HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IS
FRACTURING ENGLISH
LANGUGE?
 Following are the ways through which social media
is fracturing English Langauge:
 Using slang language
 Informal way of using language
 Shortening of words
 Homophones
 Incomplete sentence structure
 Abbreviations
 Textspeak
 Violate rules of grammar
 Brief but ungrammatical
PREVIOUS RESEARCHES:
The Impact of Texting/SMS Language on Academic
Writing of Students
RESEARCH BY Shazia Aziz et al./
ABSTRACT
 Research determine the presence or absence of SMS
features in the academic writing of the participants.
Triangulation was used for data collection i.e.
questionnaires for learners and educators and samples of
the learners’ English written work were examined for SMS
features.
RESEARCH BY PENN STATE:
 Text messaging allows tweens to send notes to
family and friends in a quick and efficient manner,
but it leads to a decline in their language and
grammar skills.
 Our research is
qualitative.
 We took view points of
the people of different
age groups.
 All of them are addict of
using social media.
SAMPLE
 People using social media regularly. And we
collected our data through facebook google twitter
and other social websites.
TOOL OF COLLECTING DATA
 We post our research question on
www.readblog.com and www.ideas.time.com and
www.facebook.com
 We also survey previous researches on slang
language techspeak and bad impact of texting on
language skills.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
 How Social Media Lingo’s Affecting Academic
Vocabulary?
 Is Social Media or Technology Affecting Reading
And Writing?
 How do you feel social media is affecting our oral
and written communications?
DATA ANALYSIS
RESEARCH HAS THREE MAIN SCHOOL OF
THOUGHTS:
Some educators and students think that textspeak
has negative impact on writing skills of student.
Enhances their written communication skills, and
therefore is a blessing.
Social Media has neither positive nor negative impact
on student’s writing.
1ST SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
 The first school of
thought bases its
argument on the fact that
for the sake of brevity,
concision, the simple
message system (SMS)
and chatting on social
media affects writing
such as grammar, syntax,
punctuation and
capitalization. It is diluting
English Language.
USE OF SLANG LANGUAGE:
ABBRIVIATIONS OR SHORT TERMS:
SOMEONE LIKE ME:
2ND SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
 People believe that
social media does
not really a threat.
The more students
write, the more they
improve upon their
writing skills.
Therefore, its
increased use rather
enhances the literacy
of users, instead of
harming it.
3RD SCHOOL OF THOUGHT
 Some has doubt whether social media really has
any effect (positive or negative) on English
grammar.
 It is the way how we use language on social media.
 52% thinks that
social media is
fracturing English
Language, 36%
believes that social
media is not
fracturing English
Language and 12%
thinks that social
media has both
positive and
negative effects on
Language.
socila media fractured language
social media doesnot fractured
langauge
both positive and negative
effects
CONCLUSION:
 With the ever increasing use of text messaging
among students this practice is damaging the use
of language in speaking and writing
 Affect the standard forms in the long run.
 Bad impact of SMS on the formal writing of
university students.
 Poor spelling and punctuation habits of learners
 Poor grades and a diminished knowledge of
correct Standard English.
 The incorrect use of full stops, commas and
exclamation marks.
 That’s why we need to
use standard form of
language, so that the
beauty and pure form of
language remains safe
as language is also
known as identity of the
group of people using
that language.
