After helping a student with this skill before class one morning I thought I would make it available online to flip my classroom a little further.
4. Context
Sonja basically understands the material
but isn’t sure how to answer the questions.
Question
What is the major influence on the climate of the Caribbean
Islands?
5.
6. Step 1
Read the entire passage to get the general idea.
Step 2
Start reading again only this time highlight what
you think are key words.
8. Like this
Winds play a big role in the climate of the Caribbean Islands.
The waters in the Caribbean Sea stay warm most of the year
and heat the air over them. Warm winds blow across the
islands, keeping the temperatures warm and constant year-
round. The Lesser Antilles are divided into islands that face
the wind and those that are protected from the wind. Those
protected from the wind receive less rain.
16. Final Step
Put it all together
The major influence on the climate of the Caribbean Islands
is the wind.
Water stays warm most of the year.
Water heats the air.
Warm winds blow, keeping the temperatures warm and
constant.
17. That is, basically, how it is done.
Take your time.
The more you do it, the easier it gets.
Soon you will do it without thinking.
Good luck!
