Business/Industry Research Project Intern
About the San Diego Microfinance Alliance
The San Diego Microfinance Alliance (SDMFA) is a consortium of local microfinance
practitioners, donors, educators, students, and professionals. We are committed to raising
the profile of microfinance in the San Diego region through a central organization that
facilitates learning opportunities for the public, microfinance practitioners, and their clients.
The Alliance brings one online location that offers information about the Alliances partner
organizations, a central calendar of microfinance-related activities in San Diego, and
collaborative tools designed for networking and practical use for those involved in local
microfinance.
Business/Industry Research Project Intern:
• Responsibilities: Research most common types of start-up businesses in San
Diego. For each business industry, use a template to create a 5 page report that
includes the following: industry research, a step-by-step guide on how to get started,
financial requirements and projections and a list of relative links and resources that
will help new business owners successfully run a company in this industry.
• Time commitment: 10-15 hours/week
• Duration: Minimum 3 month internship
• Location: Can be provided a work space at the International Rescue Committee’s
Microenterprise Program offices but project can be worked on independently from
home as well.
• Deliverables: Intern will present a series of industry guides for various small
business concepts. These guides will contain useful information that streamlines the
start-up process for entrepreneurs throughout San Diego.
• Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
Desired Qualifications:
• 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student or higher
• Availability for minimum 3 month internship
• Understanding of entrepreneurship, small business and microfinance and has
demonstrated interest in the field
• Excellent written skills
• Ability to take on projects independently
• Strong research abilities
• Knowledge of a common refugee language a plus
