−Given: You are to analyse a shifting spanner to determine the critical
location on the handle section based on static failure criteria.
−Find: Factor of safety against static failure based on the Maximum
distortion energy theory (Von Mises)
Note: You will need to determine forces based on sensible analysis (watch
primer video on Teams). If you own a shifting spanner, please measure and
use that item (must be I beam type cross-section as shown). If you don’t
own such a spanner, please use the dimensions on the next slide.
