Read the Articles of Confederation document by clicking on the link below. After taking time to think about its contents and connection to English settlers demanding independence from Britain, discuss three (3) distinct ways that the Articles establish a new governmental identity compared to British rule. Your response should be a minimum of 250 words. It should NOT include any quotations or internet material. If any part of your response is unoriginal, you will receive a zero. The document will appear lengthy, especially if you ignore instructions and attempt to do this work on a cell phone! I recommend that you take your time and go through each of the articles individually, making note of its meaning. Once you review your notes, take more time to think about the task of explaining three (3) distinct ways that the articles establish a new governmental identity compared to British rule. Transcript of Articles of Confederation (1777) To all to whom these Presents shall come, we, the undersigned Delegates of the States affixed to our Names send greeting. Whereas the Delegates of the United States of America in Congress assembled did on the fifteenth day of November in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy seven, and in the Second Year of the Independence of America agree to certain articles of Confederation and perpetual Union between the States of Newhampshire, Massachusetts-bay, Rhodeisland and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in the Words following, viz. “Articles of Confederation and perpetual Union between the States of Newhampshire, Massachusetts-bay, Rhodeisland and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Article I. The Stile of this confederacy shall be, “The United States of America.” Article II. Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom and independence, and every Power, Jurisdiction and right, which is not by this confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled. Article III. The said states hereby severally enter into a firm league of friendship with each other, for their common defence, the security of their Liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, binding themselves to assist each other, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretence whatever. Article IV. The better to secure and perpetuate mutual friendship and intercourse among the people of the different states in this union, the free inhabitants of each of these states, paupers, vagabonds and fugitives from Justice excepted, shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of free citizens in the several states; and the people of each state shall have free ingress and regress to and from any other st.

Top of Form WEEK 5: SUPREME COURT Lesson Lesson 5: The Supreme Court "A law embodies beliefs that have triumphed in the battle of ideas.” -Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Expected Outcomes To understand the evolution of the Supreme Court in relation to the other branches of power; to appreciate the difference between the “original intent” and “judicial activist” philosophies; and to critically evaluate the political and cultural importance of major Supreme Court decisions. Overview I. The Legal Framework Most American laws are based on the English legal system. The body of judge-made law is referred to as common law. The U.S. Constitution, State Constitutions and statutes - laws passed by Congress or State Legislatures - are sources upon which American law is founded. Common law countries around the world include: United States; Britain, Australia, Canada, India, and New Zealand. The United States utilizes a dual court system which is comprised of both State and Federal Courts. The rules and principles which are the basis of court decisions are referred to as Case Law. Case law has bearing on future cases that involve similar facts and constitutional issues. The case law or court rule from previous cases establishes the precedents on which future cases will be relied upon in the decision making process. The doctrine of stare decisis means to stand on the decided cases. A courts authority to hear and decide cases refers to the jurisdiction of the court. According to the Constitution, the accused must receive a fair trial in the jurisdiction in which the crime was committed. Federal Courts have jurisdiction when there is a federal question in the case, when there is diversity of citizenship involved in the case (meaning citizens from different states), and when there are two or more different states or state boundaries involved. When a case is to be heard in Federal Court, courts with limited jurisdiction include Tax and Bankruptcy Courts. These are examples of courts that deal with very specialized issues that do not deal with constitutional issues, but other federal issues. II. The Judicial Powers According to Article III of the Constitution, the judicial power of the United States would be vested in one Supreme Court. The actual authority of the Supreme Court was described as: · “The Judicial power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority; to all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls; to all Cases of admiralty and maritime Jurisdiction; to Controversies to which the United States shall be a Party; to Controversies between two or more States; between a State and Citizens of another State; between Citizens of different States; between Citizens of the same State claiming Lands under Grants of different States, and between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizen ...

A Transgenic animal is one that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome. The foreign gene are inserted into the germ line of the animal, so it can be transmitted to the progeny. Transgenic animals are animals that are genetically altered to have traits that mimic symptoms of specific human pathologies. They provide genetic model of various human disease which are important in understanding disease and development of new target.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
