A REVIEW OF SOCIAL WORKERS

2. INTRODUCTION
Thalassemia consists one of the most common chronic and
genetic hematological disorder, globally. Moreover, is a
serious life-limiting and potentially life-threatening disease
that causes substantial disruption in all dimensions of life.
Every year approximately 60,000 thalassaemic babies
are born worldwide(Clegg,2001)
Each year 8000 children with thalassemia are born
in India (Madan,1998)

Thalassemia is a major health problem not only for
the patients and their families but also for the
Public Health System of each country due to the
cost of treatment involving regular transfusions,
iron chelation, frequent hospitalization and general
medical follow up ( Elizabeth & Loukopoulos
,2011)

Psycho social problem in thalassemic children
Poor academic performance as of frequent
hospitalization.
Lack of energy to accomplish daily tasks.
Separation from parents & family members leads to
emotional deprivation.

Psycho social problems in thalassemic adolescents
Adolescence, is an intermediate phase between
childhood and adulthood, where takes place a
permanent change in the body.
Self identity & Low Self esteem.
Poor academic performance.
Affected heterosexual relationship.
7. REVIEW LITERATURE
Children with chronic physical illnesses
exemplified by thalassemia are vulnerable to
emotional and behavioral problems
(Eiser,1990)
Chronic nature of thalassemia and its
intensive and demanding treatment result in
significant psychologic burden on the patients
Social isolation, reduced self esteem, lower
academic achievement, and stigmatization, all
lead to psychological burden(Bush & Politis
,1998).
8. ROLE OF SOCIAL WORKER
Individual- Social worker can assess the
problems and inadequacies in clients life and
gave support in the form of counseling.
Family –At family level social worker can
provide psycho-education to family members.
Significant others- Bring awareness among
teachers as they are bridge between school
and home.
Community- At community level bring
awareness and endeavour for eliminating
stigma associated with it.
9. CONCLUSION
It’s a matter of grave concern to think about
thalassemic patients woes by which they are going in
their whole life with bringing awareness in society and
early detection of thalassemic patients can start
intervention from beginning, Parents can gave their
emotional support and pumps energy inside their
children’s that they can excel in their life despite of
their limitations and teachers' role has a beneficial
impact as they are often able to change negative
attitudes or perceptions of classmates thus offering
precious help for their integration into society.

Government can play pivotal role by promoting
more research stressing on biological, psychological
and social aspects of thalassemia patients which
helps in finding new remedies and treatment
associated with this disorder.
