This post was an academic post and I left because of shortage of clinical work although a lot of clinical work was promised when I was appointed. I utilized this period for getting further training at the Sharjah Surgical Institute in improving my surgical skills in laparoscopic surgery. I was exposed and trained to make question papers for undergraduate students and to train budding surgeons in basic surgical skills. I was an instructor during this period for Royal College of Surgeons, England Basic skills surgical courses and an Examiner for final MBBS students. I worked as HOD & Senior Consultant in the Dept: of Surgery at Sohar hospital under the Ministry of Health, Sultanate of Oman from April 2003 for 6 years .This is a large regional hospital catering to people of North battinah region, which amounts to more than 30% of population of Oman. I have 2 Opd sessions, 2 operating sessions and 1 endoscopy session every week. We have 17 doctors in our Dept: working in various grades from Medical officer to Senior Specialist. We look after a lot of trauma and refer patients to tertiary center only for major Head injury. In our Dept: we are doing a lot of advanced Laparoscopic surgery and AV access for dialysis patients. The Department does more than 2500 surgeries every year. The Dept: trains interns from Sultan Qaboos University and has become a teaching hospital after the Oman medical college started. I came back to India because of family reasons and joined Sree Uthradom Thirunal hospital as Consultant Surgeon with special interest in Gastroenterology and laparoscopic surgery. I had 3 operating days and 3 outpatient sessions every week. I worked at Royal Preston hospital as Senior House officer for 9 months and got exposed to basic and advanced laparoscopic Surgery. I was trained by my Consultant to do upper and lower GI scopes and basic laparoscopy. I also had the opportunity to perform hernias, appendectomies, bowel resections etc independently. Dec 1992 to June 1993 Senior house officer Dept: of A & E Maelor hospital, Wrexham, UK I went to UK in Aug 1992 to get further training and to get the FRCS.   7. Aug 1991 to June 1992 Specialist Dept: of Surgery Medical Trust hospital Trivandrum, India. After my MS I joined Medical Trust hospital , which is a large hospital in the private sector. We had 50 bed strength for surgery and 25 bed strength for Thoracic Surgery. I was 2nd on call on all days of the week. I was given the responsibility of examining and deciding by myself whether emergency procedures were required and to proceed with them independently. I had the opportunity to manage major abdominal and limb trauma on an average of 2-3 every week. I also did independent ward rounds and took decisions in the day to day management of cases. I was required to assist in all Thoracic Surgery cases, which amounted to 4-8 per week. I was allowed to do a certain amount of independent Thoracic surgeries like simple lobectomies and oesophageal resections. During this time I also had the opportunity to do other major surgical cases independently. The hospital is recognized for Diplomate of national Board examinations and I passed my Dip NB during this time. I also conducted lectures and teaching programmes for Nursing students and presented various papers in the Regional journal club once a month. April 1988 to April 1991 Resident in surgery Dept: of Surgery Medical college, Trivandrum, India. I did my 3yr residency in Gen: Surgery at Medical College, Trivandrum, India after finishing 1 year house surgency at the same place. This is a 5000 bedded University hospital with all medical and surgical specialties. The Dept: of Surgery and allied specialties has a bed strength of 400 beds. Here I learnt the basic surgical techniques and during my final year I did major cases under supervision and intermediate cases independently. I was 2nd on call for A & E admissions and got lot of opportunity to manage Trauma cases under the supervision of my Consultants. I participated in journal clubs,seminars,CME’s and clinical discussions as part of my residency programme.I did clinical Research during this 3 year period and published a thesis which was accepted by the Kerala University and on passing the examination I was awarded MS ( Master of Surgery). I was actively involved with my Consultants in the teaching of undergraduates and used to take regular bedside clinics for them..

Teaching Experience: In my new job as Consultant in Surgery at Sharjah, I was very much involved with teaching of undergraduate students of Sharjah University towards their undergraduate degree(MBBS). This is a new system where curriculum is based on integrated teaching. I used to do regular lectures, bed side teaching sessions and examinations. I am very much familiar with new teaching methods and new system of student evaluation where MCQ’s, EMQ’s and DOCEE( Direct observation clinical encounter examination) are done.
