Any child in the Saskatoon Health Region age 0 to 16
Must need dental treatment
No dental coverage
Limited dental insurance and face barriers to using dental

Offered in 26 schools with no community water fluoridation
and in communities where children have poor oral health
2100 students rinse weekly from September to June with .2%
sodium fluoride mouthrinse

13. Fluoride Varnish
• Fluoride varnish prevents cavities by:
reversing demineralization (early tooth decay)
stopping active decay
• Fluoride is painted on to dry teeth with a brush for
20 to 30 seconds
• Children should not brush until the next day and
avoid sticky foods
1,279 children age 0 to 5 received fluoride (2009-10)

PHN’s provide anticipatory guidance on oral health
at 6, 12, and 18 months, and 4 years of age
At each CHC visit, child receives a toothbrush, and
parent receives written information on oral health
Over 12,000 anticipatory guidance consultations in
