This is the second in the presentation series “Guard Your Heart.” Use this series as an opportunity to allow God to give you a “spiritual heart checkup.” At the close of the slide presentation is a link to a musical exhortation from Steve Green to “Guard Your Heart.”
2. The Old Testament Conscience
The Hebrew has no word for “conscience” and
used the word “heart” for its function as in Job
27:6.
Job 27:6 (NIV2011) 6 I will maintain my innocence and never
let go of it; my conscience [Heb. = heart] will not reproach
me as long as I live.

It Is the Center of Our
Spiritual Life: Our Conscience
3. The New Testament Conscience,
1 John 2:19-21
1 John 3:19-21 (NIV2011) 19 This is how we know that we
belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:
20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our
hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not
condemn us, we have confidence before God

4. Man’s Heart Is the Source of His Evil
Thoughts.
Matthew 15:19-20 (NIV2011) 19 For out of the heart come
evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony,
slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands
does not defile them.”

It Has A Great Capacity for Evil
5. Man’s Constant Evil Thoughts Were the
Reason for God’s Judgment with the
Flood.
Genesis 6:5, 7 (NIV2011) 5 The LORD saw how great the
wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every
inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time…7 So
the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have
created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move
along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

6. Man Conspires and Schemes to Do Evil
Psalm 64:5-6 (NIV2011) 5 They encourage each other in
evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, “Who will see
it?” 6 They plot injustice and say, “We have devised a perfect plan!”
Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

7. Man Possesses a Desperately Evil
Heart.
Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NIV2011) 9 The heart is deceitful
above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the
LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person
according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

8. Man Should Pray that His Heart Not Be
Drawn to Evil.
Psalm 141:3-4 (NIV2011) 3 Set a guard over my mouth,
LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. 4 Do not let my heart be
drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with
those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.
