1. G321 Preliminary Task Evaluation

Write about the preliminary task. What were you asked to do? How did you
find each stage of the process?
We were tasked with creating a continuity task, which involved the use of the
180 degree rule, which restricted the camera from a virtual line, thus preventing
an odd effect regarding the characters line of sight. Firstly the long shot which
was of a person walking down a corridor, it was imperative we kept them in the
centre of shot to portray to the audience that they’re a main character. The
following shot was a close up of the door handle this would help break the long
monotonous scene previous. The third was a master shot containing both ‘Actor
1’ and ‘Actor 2’ it would also help establish the room and setting. It showed
‘Actor 1’ entering the room and sitting down. Following on from that was a series
of over the shoulder shots in a shot-reverse-shot manor. This would involve
diegetic sound specifically the Actors engaging in dialogue. These were the
hardest scenes as the actors needed to be able to repeat the actions of the
previous shot, thus showing continuity. We then added a wide-medium shot to
show the two actors sitting together at the table with a letter, the letter would be
centre frame showing how it’s now more important than the actors. Lastly was a
close up of the letter showing its writing and thus showing to the audience what
was actually written upon it.
Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task:
180 degree rule- This entails that once a shot has been chosen in an enclosed
space it the camera should remain parallel to the line and must never cross it.
This can be done if the director either wants to distort the audience or show a
conversing angle.
2. Match on action- the art of getting continuity from scene to scene this acts as a
flowing effect. This is usually done when editing as the clips/takes must gently
glide from one to another usually with no audio disruption. A director might go
against this to create a sense of disruption with to audience.
Shot-revers-shot is an editing technique used during a conversation in which
there is an exchange of over the shoulder shots showing the person whose
speaking. This done purely to add a sense of continuity to the sequence and
prevents and long takes.
List three things that went well during the filming/editing process:
There was great visual continuity from shot to shot allowing the clip flow well.
The piece had suspense and the transitions also basic created a sense of sadness
The camera always showed what it was meant to- focused on the important
thing.
List three things you think could have been improved in these stages:
Some of the Diegetic sound lacked continuity meaning sound from other clips
had to be used over shots.
Different or more shots could have been used to create more suspense and
tension.
There could have been more interesting transitions, between shots for example a
cut in could have been used.
Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for you 2-minute film
opening? If so, what? If not – think, then say
I feel like the opening should either follow a sinister or even sad opening as this
will be much easier to connote and can often be effective. The editing will start of
slow with long takes and then if sinister will speed up to create and ere of
tension.
