  2. 2.  Dr. Sally A. Booth provides medical services as well as cosmetic services at her Indianapolis dermatology practice. For instance, Dr. Sally Booth evaluates and provides treatment for individuals who have skin cancer. Patients who have received a skin cancer diagnosis often worry about how the cancer will be treated. They want to have the cancer removed completely while at the same time keeping as much of the healthy nearby skin as possible. In some cases, Mohs surgery can successfully achieve these two goals. Mohs surgery, or chemosurgery, is a special technique for treating skin cancer that involves removing skin in layers.
  3. 3.  As the doctor removes a layer, he or she examines it closely to check for cancerous cells. If cancer is there, the doctor continues taking off layers until the entire area of the tumor is gone. In comparison, other methods of removing cancer might guess at the borders of the tumor and miss some of the cancerous cells, a factor that can cause a possible future reoccurrence of the cancer and the need for additional treatments. The number of layers the doctor removes depends on the individual tumor’s size and shape. Once the procedure is over, the doctor will evaluate how to address the wound for the best long-term appearance of the treated area. A doctor can provide additional details on one’s candidacy for Mohs surgery and what to expect before and after the treatment.
