• Entrepreneur and e-commerce pioneer Jeff
Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bezos had an early
love of computers and studied computer science
and electrical engineering at Princeton
University. After graduation in 1986,he worked
on Wall Street In computer science field, and in
1990 became the youngest senior vice president
at the investment firm D.E. Shaw. Four years
later, he quit his lucrative job to open
Amazon.com, a virtual bookstore that became
one of the internet's biggest success stories.
• While Amazon still struggles to make a profit
on its retail end, the company made big
waves in 2013 because of the success
of Amazon Web Services (AWS). As
computing switches from devices and local
servers to the cloud, AWS is emerging as a
true leader in the space, impressing
investors and accelerating cloud adaptation
across the globe. Bezos is credited with the
growth of e-commerce by taking the site
from being primarily a bookseller to its
status today as the top retailer on the web.
In 2013, Bezos made headlines when
he purchased The Washington Post in a
$250 million deal. As of July 2014,
according to Forbes's The World's
Billionaires list, Bezos is listed as the
17th wealthiest person in the world
with an estimated net worth of $32.3
billion.
