professional managers in today’s business organizations. We will explore the functions,
concepts, and skills relevant to modern management practices. The course begins with a
brief historical overview of management thought, then provides a comprehensive discussion
of the fundamental principles and theories associated with the four basic functions of
management; i.e., planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
The main aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of

business management and organizational situations in an ever-increasingly complex
environment.
3. Introduce a very limited range of broad concepts of organizational management
which will help you to accomplish (1) and (2) and which we hope will help you to be
more effective in your future work situations.
In this course we do concentrate on the analysis of business problems set in the turbulent
arena of the business environment. Issues such as planning, organizing, leading, decision-
making, organizations structure and cultures, etc. will be examined. Part of teaching and
learning method is to concentrate on the analysis of the problems revealed in a variety of
business case situations. These real life business situations will be selected and developed on
on-going basis in order to give you a challenging and rewarding experience in trying to
analyze them. In addition, a number of other teaching methods will be utilized. Your
participation is therefore a prerequisite.
The main objectives of the course include:
1. Provide a general overview of the history of management thought.
2. Explain the major functions of management.
3. Discuss major challenges facing today’s organizations.
4. Emphasize the role of managers in organizations.
5. Highlight the essential role of problem solving and decision-making in management.
