3. Development of Ayurveda
• The education of Ayurveda was suppressed by the British by
establishing western system of medicine
• Later to uplift the Ayurvedic education in 1907
• All India Ayurvedic conference, was held under the leadership
of Shri Shankardaji Shatri Pade
• Later during 1908-09 Nikhila Bharata varshiya Ayurveda
Vidhya Peeth was established followed with Guru-Shishya
tradition of education with a goal to organize regular teaching
& exams throughout India

4. • After the independence the government of India has realized the
importance of Ayurveda & other traditional system of medicine
• Various committees & state acts constituted to uplift Ayurveda
• Indian drugs & cosmetic act 1940
• Board of Indian system of medicine practices act 1947 of
Mysore
• Punjab Ayurvedic & Unani practices act 1949
• Maharashtra medical practices act 1961
• Andhra Pradesh Ayurvedic & Homeopathy medical practices
act 1956

6. Comon Committee
• After the establishment of Kanyaka Parameswari Ayurvedic
college & pharmacy at Madras by Pt . D. Gopalacharyalu in
year 1905, people realized importance of Ayurveda &
awareness towards the system of Ayurvedic medicine
• Due to effort of eminent Ayurvedic physician & different
organization
• The Govt of Madars constituted a single member committee
named “Comon Committee” headed by Dr Comon in year
1917, to submit a report regarding the usefulness of
Ayurvedic system of medicine

7. Recommendation (Approval)
• There is no need for establishment of separate Ayurvedic
hospital, college & dispensaries.
• It is enough to supply useful medicine of Ayurveda, Unani
& siddha to the modern hospitals to cater the needs of
public

8. Usman Committee
• The Govt of Madaras appointed a committee on indigenous
system of medicine on 17th Oct 1921, which was headed by
Khan Bahadhur Sir ND Usman Saheb
• Secretary was captain G Srinivas Murthy, Dr U Rama Roa
& others were members
• They submitted report to Govt of Madaras on 17th Feb 1923

9. Recommendation:
• The Govt should take necessary step for recognition &
encouragement of Indian system of medicine
• The Govt should start good number of Ayurvedic college,
hospital, immediately to produce sufficient number of
practioners to serve public
• The teaching methodology should be practical oriented
• The institute should produce Best Doctors for medical
relief, PG for teaching, Research Scholars for develop of
science
• CCIM should establish for registration

10. Action taken by the Govt:
• Established Govt school of Indian medicine at Madras on
6th Jan 1925 to import teaching in Ayurveda, Siddha, &
Unani medicine along with the essential of modern medicine
• 1926 established hospital with OPD & IPD facilities
• 1930 PG course FIM (Fellow of Indian Medicine), ALIM
(Associate Licentiate of Indian medicine) started
• Duration of course must be 5 years
• Teachers of Ayurvedic college should be well paid
• Rural dispensaries established

11. Bhore Committee
• Govt of India appointed Bhore committee under the
chairmanship of Sri Joseph Bhore on 25 Dec 1943 &
submitted report on 18th Dec 1945

12. Recommendation
• Not consider the matter of Indian system of medicine & left to
Govt for decision
• After the representation & agitation Govt of madaras passed
following resolution
• To start diploma, degree & PG course in indigenous system of
medicine
• Practinors of Indian medicine should be absorbed into state
health organization by giving scientific training

13. Chopra Committee
• After 1st health minister conference held at Delhi in 1946
• The Govt of India appointed a committee on 19th Dec 1946 on
indigenous system of medicine under
 Chairmanship  Col Sir R N Chopra;
 Secretary  Dr C dwarakanth;
 Members  Dr A Lakshmikant, Dr B A Pathak etc
• Report submitted to Govt on 28/7/1948

14. Recommendation
• Integrated system of medicine
• Uniform curricula throughout the country
• Basic qualification of student 12th pass & optional PCB
(Sanskrit Must)
• Duration of course 5 years
• To publish text book of integrated medicine
• Trained faculty with good salary

15. Action taken by Govt
• Research on scientific lines in Ayurveda & Unani
system of medicine
• Practinors of ISM given further training to utilize for
public service
• Uniform syllabus for ISM throughout India

16. Pandit Committee
• Established on 2nd Dec 1949 under
Chairmanship  Dr C G Pandit
Member  Dr R R Pathak
• Submitted report on 1951

17. Recommendation
• Uniform curriculum throughout country
• A central research institute of ISM should start at Jamnagar
• Various diploma & degree of ISM should be banned by fixing
one degree throughout country

18. Action taken by Govt
• Govt of India had started the central institute of research in
indigenous system of medicine at Jamnagar in1953

19. Dave Committee
• Constituted under the chairmanship  Sri Daya Sankar
Trikamji Dave  27th April 1955
• Members were 4 health ministers  Bombay, West Bengal,
Travan core, Cochin & Hyderabad
• Joint Secretary  Dr P M Mehta

20. Recommendation
• Course 5 ½ years
• Admission eligibility 12th Standard with PCB
• Uniform curriculum throughout the country
• CCIM should be sorted to govern the education
• All college should affiliated to nearest university
• All college should be attached to hospital at ratio of 5 beds for
1 student

21. Action taken by Govt
• Central Govt not taken any step & accepted to allow the state
Govt to follow course of their choice
• Shuddha Ayurveda, Unani & Siddha started from 1960 onwards

22. Udupa Committee
• Constituted on 29th July 1958 under chairmanship of
Dr K N Udupa
• Secretary  Shri R Narasimhan
• Member  Shri kaladi Parameshwaran Pillai

23. Recommendation
• Integrated of modern subjects like surgery obstetrics etc. in
ISM to serve rural public
• More PG center should be started
• Subject wise text book should be written
• To affiliate college to near university
• Survey collection & preservation of medicinal plants
• To establish CCIM, & CCR in ISM

24. Action Taken by Govt
• 22-5-1969 decision taken to start central council for
research in ISM it started functioning from 1-12-1969

25. Vyas Committee
• Established under chairmanship  Mohanlal Vyas in 1962-63
• Govt of Gujarat & recommended Shuddha Ayurveda course in
country

26. Mudalior Committee
• Established in 1959 under chairmanship of Shri Mudailor
Recommendation
• To establish central council of Ayurveda
• To start Ayurvedic college with uniform syllabus all over India
• Should start PG center in every state

27. Sampurna Ananda Committee
• Constituted in 1964 by health minister of Uttara Pradesha,
Dr Sampurandaji with pandit Sri shiva sharmaji & deputy
director of Ayurveda
Recommendation
• Uniform integrated syllabus for BAMS which came into force
in 1976
