The role of water in society and the world economy is significant and it keeps growing. The days when we could assume adequate and continuous supply throughout our lives are gone. Sea Level Rise and climate change have introduced an entire new subspecialty within the worlds of design and construction. This month I had the opportunity to present a vision for Blue Tech and the the Blue Economy that I believe could be economically viable as well as rooted in the human values of fishable and swimmable water. When the urban area was small, water from these lakes were used for water supply to the residents. When the urban areas expanded with more population, the quantity of water from these lakes was not adequate. Reservoirs and dams were constructed to meet the requirement of large quantity of water like ; Hesarghatta Reservoir and Thippagondana Halli Reservoir. When water is not drawn for drinking water supply, they continue as lakes for environmental purpose, charging of underground water, and environmental improvement. Lands along the natural valleys feeding rain water to the lakes, and government lands attached to the lakes are being encroached upon due to its potential for urban development. Builders, politicians, influential persons and land grabbers were found to be involved according to the enquiry reports and press reports. These encroachments reduced the open areas in the city and further tree planting is affected. Inaction by the officials /agencies to prevent the new encroachments and removal of existing encroachments has resulted in reduction of flow of rain water to the lakes. Reduced flow to Thippagondanahalli and Hesarghatta reservoirs are mainly mentioned in the media reports to cite some examples. Other reasons for reducing the flow of rain water to the lakes is that the urban development in the catchments areas of the lakes which is not according to the natural terrain and slopes. The local authorities and the developers get the lands bull-dozed to make it a level land before taking up development. Due to such developments affecting the natural terrain , flow of rain water to the natural valleys get disturbed. The natural valleys feeding rain water to the lakes are used by the City Corporation as major storm water drains (SWD). Debris and garbage are dumped in the major, minor, and road side storm water drains which affect the flow of rain water to the lakes. Due to all the above reasons, the capacity of the lakes is reduced, and during heavy rains low lying areas like; H.S.R. Connecting opposite shores of a lake, sea or river, has always been one of the major tasks to be faced by Civil Engineering, it being a fundamental need for the development of the areas surrounding a waterway. Nowadays, this issue is still topical and of great importance, as it is proved by the numerous large infrastructures which have been built or planned to be built in the last years all over the world, such as, for instance the Channel Tunnel, linking the shores of France with the ones of the United Kingdom, the Immersed Tunnel under construction in the Bosporus Strait (Turkey) or the Suspension Bridge designed to connect Calabria and Sicily in the Messina Strait (Italy). Numerous other important and noticeable cases could be mentioned, however the aforementioned ones probably represent the most advanced examples of the structural solutions which are traditionally most widely used to link areas divided by the presence of waterways: Cable Supported Bridges (i.e. Suspension or Cable stayed Bridges), Underground Tunnels and Immersed Tunnels. An underwater tunnel is a passage, gallery, or roadway beneath a body of water. Underwater tunnels are used for highway traffic, railroads, and subways; to transport water, sewage, oil, and gas; to divert rivers around dam sites while the dam is being built; and for military and civil defence purposes. Modern underwater tunnelling begins by constructing an immersed tube within a pre-dug trench on the river or sea floor. To do this, pre-fabricated sections of steel tube are floated into position and strategically sunk into the trench. The complexity of the design issues related to these classic technological solutions, increases as the distance to be covered grows up, so that the crossing of long span waterways can be, in many cases, very difficult and sometimes impossible. Moreover, the traditional systems feature some disadvantages which in some cases are of great importance, leading to the necessity to find alternative technical solutions.

This is my Inaugural Lecture about the Blue Revolution. It shows that we need to ralize urban expansions on the water and combine this with floating food production and floating algae biofuel production to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. Much of the work was developed with my colleagues at DeltaSync. We want to collaborate with people all over the world to develop pilot projects and expand on the water in a sustainable way. it goes much further than being self-sufficient. The purpose is to create a symbiosis between cities on land and water. Floating cities could use the waste CO2 and nutrients of land based cities in a productive way, providing at the same time affordable flood proof housing for the people. Most of the building blocks are there. We need to bring it together to make the next step. Because only a small part of the ocean is needed, the rest can become a nature reserve giving marine ecosystems a long term perspective on survival. A perspective that is currently lacking. The presentation was initially part of my Inaugural Lecture at Rotterdam University of Applied Science in November 2012, but I removed it due to time restrictions. Next to my work on floating cities I also work on transformation of land based cities into floodproof eco cities. "Engineers are challenged to develop cost effective ways to produce large quantities of water suitable for drinking, crop irrigation and commercial use for regions of the world that suffer from water shortages. Water desalination is expensive, requiring large amounts of energy and specialized equipment to convert saltwater into drinking water. The present study aims to develop a cheaper, cleaner, easy and more energy efficient way of desalinating seawater technique by using natural filters, it can help the common people as it affordable during their immediate requirements. The developed technique seemed to be very effective in reducing the concentration of seawater ions. The desalination system is developed by selecting coconut shell charcoal as the substrate material. As per the results obtained from prototype of seawater and brackish water, there is 60 reduction in chloride and 75 reduction in sodium this is mainly due to the usage of activated carbon charcoal as the filter media. It is also observed through experiments that there is 100 reduction in iron,53 reduction in sulphate, 20 reduction in total dissolved solids and 12 reduction in hardness which clearly indicates that the selected filter medias those are activated carbon charcoal, sand, laterite would be used as the filter medias for future experiments on desalination using natural filters.This work is to present an overview of current and future technologies applied to the desalination of brackish as well as seawater to produce freshwater for supplementing drinking water supplies to the common people in smaller quantity. Removal efficiency increases with the increase in contact time respectively, for both seawater and brackish water, which was considered to be maximum purification ~40 . Project-based learning (PBL) involves students designing, developing, and constructing hands-on solutions to a problem. The educational value of PBL is that it aims to build students’ creative capacity to work through difficult or ill-structured problems, commonly in small teams. Typically, PBL takes students through the following phases or steps: Identifying a problem Agreeing on or devising a solution and potential solution path to the problem (i.e., how to achieve the solution) Designing and developing a prototype of the solution Refining the solution based on feedback from experts, instructors, and/or peers Depending on the goals of the instructor, the size and scope of the project can vary greatly. Students may complete the four phases listed above over the course of many weeks, or even several times within a single class period. Because of its focus on creativity and collaboration, PBL is enhanced when students experience opportunities to work across disciplines, employ technologies to make communication and product realization more efficient, or to design solutions to real-world problems posed by outside organizations or corporations. Projects do not need to be highly complex for students to benefit from PBL techniques. Often times, quick and simple projects are enough to provide students with valuable opportunities to make connections across content and practice. Implementing Project-Based Learning As a pedagogical approach, PBL entails several key processes: (1) defining problems in terms of given constraints or challenges, (2) generating multiple ideas to solve a given problem, (3) prototyping — often in rapid iteration — potential solutions to a problem, and (4) testing the developed solution products or services in a “live” or authentic setting. Defining the Problem PBL projects should start with students asking questions about a problem. What is the nature of problem they are trying to solve? What assumptions can they make about why the problem exists? Asking such questions will help students frame the problem in an appropriate context. If students are working on a real-world problem, it is important to consider how an end user will benefit from a solution. Generating Ideas Next, students should be given the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss their ideas for solving the problem. The emphasis here is not to generate necessarily good ideas, but to generate many ideas. As such, brainstorming should encourage students to think wildly, but to stay focused on the problem. Setting guidelines for brainstorming sessions, such as giving everyone a chance to voice an idea, suspending judgement of others’ ideas, and building on the ideas of others will help make brainstorming a productive and generative exercise. Prototyping Solutions Designing and prototyping a solution are typically the next phase of the PBL process.

Our focus is on innovative ways of monitoring water quality and ecology using underwater drones (dynamic). Until now we have been working with an underwater drone equipped with water quality sensors and a video camera. A new drone is currently in the development stage, and our goal is to make it an efficient and powerful tool, suitable for various uses and applications in the field of water.

Impact of floating urbanisation on water quality and ecology

DeltaSync completed the preliminary concept in December 2013. In our vision, the city is composed of modular platforms – either 50 x 50 meter squares, or pentagons with 50 meter sides. Squares and pentagons can be connected and arranged in numerous branch like structures. Squares are estimated to cost approximately $15 million each. This is equivalent $393 per square foot of gross space. But since 20% of each platform is reserved for open/green space, the report projects issuable space to cost $504 per square foot ($5425/square meter). Reinforced concrete was chosen as the construction material of choice for its price and durability. Concrete structures would be molded into sturdy hollow boxes, or “caissons”. Modules would support three story buildings. The design takes into account apartments, terraced housing, office space, and hotels. This concept is based on 11 modules, which could host 225-300 full-time residents when combined, with an additional 50 hotel beds. The total projected cost would therefore be approximately $167 million. This concept also assesses a scaleable method of financing a breakwater, which could eventually surround the city and allow it to move out to the open ocean. Mobility of the individual modules is key from the perspective of guaranteeing autonomy for the city – in the event that the relationship with a particular host nation no longer suits either party, the platforms could detach from their moorings and float to a different location. Modularity and mobility also enable dynamic geography and empower citizens of the city to rearrange into more desirable configurations as the population grows and evolves.

Cities in delta areas are threatened by the impacts of climate change, urbanization and land subsidence. In this presentation, the concept of ‘Flood-proof Ecocity’ has been introduced to cope with the expected challenges and to summarize recent debates about future water cities. In a ‘Flood-proof Ecocity’ urban water systems are used as a source of energy, nutrients and local water supply. There is an important role for citizens as co-producers of the urban space. Citizens will also be involved in local water supply and energy production. Surface water in Flood-proof Ecocities is used for a wide variety of functions including floating buildings and water-based urban transport. The water manager is involved from the beginning of spatial developments. To adapt cities to extreme weather events and flood risk, flood control is integrated with urban development and urban renewal. Next to technical and design elements, this presentation has presented multiple building blocks that are needed for the governance of Flood-proof Ecocities. Important elements include: improving stakeholder receptivity, improving the competitiveness of innovations, creating a commercial markets for innovations, introducing new institutional mechanisms and facilitating new roles for citizens, technical professionals and designers.

Urban systems contain assets of high value, complex and interdependent infrastructure networks. These infrastructure networks are critical for the continuity of economic activities as well as for the people’s basic living needs. Hotspot buildings are essential nodes in critical infrastructure on which urban areas depend for their functioning. This article evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of several concepts of flood proofing vulnerable hotspots buildings. For this purpose a design tool has been made to assist designers and decision makers in selecting and evaluating flood proofing concepts. Flood characteristics, building characteristics and location characteristics are used as input for the evaluation of the effectiveness of flood proofing hotspots with regard to costs and other relevant aspects.
