2. Adolescence is a critical period for maturation of
neurobiological processes that underline higher cognitive
functions and social emotional behavior.

3. Aside from these cognitive and emotional changes,
adolescence is also characterized by marked physical changes
which prepare the body for reproduction.
All these changes make this period a complex biological
and maturational event that develops the individual as a
whole.

4. Adolescence can also bring all sorts of problems because
of the biological changes experienced by one. These changes
can be too overwhelming and seem like a nightmare for any
adolescent, however, one can easily cope with it by being
conscious of these changes, and facing them head-on.

A. Preadolescence:
This stage is also called the Puberty Stage. It is the
period in which a child who is asexual becomes a sexual
being. It marks the closing years of childhood and the
beginning years of adolescence. It is also considered a
unique and destructive period.
For the boys, it is the age of “manhood”. For the girls,
sexual maturity begins.

A. Preadolescence:
Some characteristics of this stage include:
 Rapid growth in the body size during a year or two before sex
organs begin to function and then decrease gradually.
 Changes in body proportion.
 A tendency to develop unfavorable self-concepts, becoming
underachievers.
 A changed body or having sexually approved sex roles.

Adolescence came from the Latin word, “adolescere,”
which means “to grow” or “to grow to maturity.” The
entire concept of adolescence which includes maturity on
the physical, mental, and social aspects.

In psychological terms, adolescence is the age when an
individual becomes a part of the adult society. This is the
stage in which he or she begins a search for his or her own
identity and role in the society. He or she starts to decide
whether he or she is still a child or already an adult.

This is also the period in which the adolescents keep
distance from their parents. They would rather seek the
company of their peers and love to be with them instead.
They find comfort and haven with them since they share
common interests and ideas.

2. They love to relax and talk to their friends and peers.
3. They love dancing, singing, watching TV, and movies.
4. They love going to the mall.
5. They like listening to music.
6. They daydream and see themselves as conquering heroes,
gaining prestige in the eyes of their peer group.

8. They like to get together with their peers where they feel
secured.
9. They loved to help people who have been misunderstood,
maltreated, or oppressed.
10. They feel the need to establish sexual identity and become
comfortable with one’s own body.
11. They are constantly centered on their physical appearance and
actions.
12. They try dating as an experiment.
