Good data sources are essential for great processing, curating and outputting. Many of these are already available today, but most of them aren’t annotated or machine-readable. This presentation will give you places to look for publicly available data sets and tools that you can use to browse, remix and visualize them.

As institutions put more collections online they will inevitably come across wide variations in the level of description within collections. Without unlimited resources (time, staff and funding) it can be a daunting task to describe the collection. An increasingly recognized way to gather descriptions is to use enthusiastic amateurs and subject experts inside and outside the organization and other interested parties through crowdsourcing. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Digital Archives is using crowdsourcing to elevate the description of artifacts in the museum collection. This presentation will outline the decision-making process, outreach efforts and a review of our successes and lessons learned in this endeavor. The presentation will include metrics on the site visits to the various collections, emphasizing users’ interaction with the items we’ve crowdsourced. We will also illustrate how the new 6.0 user comment option was utilized in this process. There will be a review of our decisions on standards and best practices. We will also share our assessment of some of the research literature on crowdsourcing.

For Beyond the Black Box, University of Edinburgh, February 2017 As the datasets used by humanists become ever larger and more readily accessible, the ability to render and interpret overwhelmingly large amounts of information in graphically literate ways has become an increasingly important part of the researcher’s skillset. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the core principles of scholarly data visualisation and shown how to use a variety of visualisation tools. Visualisations may sound like the opposite of a black box, as they display the data provided. However, aside from 'truthiness' of things on a screen, lots of invisible algorithmic decisions affect what appears on the screen. Data used in visualisations is increasingly generated algorithmically rather than manually. What choices is software making for you, and whose world view do they reflect? Algorithms are choices - if you can't read the source code or access the learned model, how can you understand them?

There's a wealth of data readily available, but few people know what to do with it. Based on our 7 years of practical experience running the leading Canadian data-visualization studio and working with high-profile clients, we share practical ways to use data in design & communications, while giving an overview of the challenges & opportunities ahead. Creatives will be interested in learning how to use data in their works, marketers will discover new ways of communicating information. Five things you will learn: 1- How data can be used as an input in the create process 2- How data can be used in communication & public relation 3- Discover "the spectrum of visualization" 4- Learn about the challenges of working with data 5- Discover the new disciplines emerging around the usage of data

Today’s museums are awash in data. With so many sources of information available, an organization can be drowning in numbers, but starved for real insight. Robert Stein, former Deputy Director of the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), will examine how museums can begin to collect and analyze data to illuminate their practice and enhance their impact on visitors. Using a unique visitor loyalty program at the DMA as a case study, he will raise questions about what “big data” in the cultural sector looks like and what insights it might provide.

A keynote for the 2015 We are Museums Conference in Berlin, Germany. Museums… why should we care? Much has been written about the changes our culture is experiencing as institutions that once held a place of primary esteem have now somehow become less important than they once were. Museums are at the crux of this change and are wondering how we might preserve and bottle the relevance we hold with our audiences. At the same time, we find that relevance to be changing, ephemeral, and eroding. How should museums answer these fundamental questions about our impact and why we matter at all? When challenged to defend the public investment and trust that we have stewarded for so many years, are we prepared to give a good account? In this talk, Rob will expand on his seminal article about museum impact, Museums… So What? and will provide new insights and opportunities for museums to look towards to document and demonstrate actual real impact that museums provide and the tangible benefits museums can bring to their communities. “Museums… so what?” will follow up on his much discussed article from the CODE|WORDS series on Medium. https://medium.com/code-words-technology-and-theory-in-the-museum/

This talk was presented at the We Are Museums Conference in May-June 2015 in Berlin, Germany. It seems that today’s museums are awash in data. With so many sources of data available to us, museums can easily feel that they’re drowning in numbers, but starved for real insight. This talk will present practical ways that museums can begin to collect and analyze data to help illuminate their own practice and impact with visitors. Using a unique visitor loyalty program at the Dallas Museum of Art as a case study, this talk will raise questions about what “big data” in the cultural sector really looks like and what insights it might provide to museums. Growing up, our schools instill a clas- sical distinction between the arts and sciences, and as adults, our professional training continues to reinforce those barriers. Yet as we seek a culture of innovation and creativity, those boundaries between art and science are becoming more and more artificial, and perhaps even detrimental to a comprehensive view of the world that allows for out-of-the-box solutions to this generation’s most pressing issues.

The growth and scale of the world’s cities is exploding at an amazing rate. By some counts, the population of cities is growing at nearly 1 million people every week and will top seven billion by the middle of the century. At the same time, popular culture’s fascination with technology, mobile devices, digital media, and social networking seems to pose a significant threat to the appreciation and relevance of cultural heritage in our contemporary society. Considering these two factors together forces us to ask some concerning questions about what place culture will have in tomorrow’s cities. Are mobile devices killing museum experiences as some have asserted? Does the cultural heritage field’s current fascination with participation and engagement actually endanger cultural appreciation and learning? The answers to these questions have become polarizing in the press and among professionals in museums, but the answer does not need to be either one or the other. This presentation will suggest a practical and balanced approach to adopting digital platforms and practices in museums that focus the experience on a personal and aesthetic appreciation of cultural heritage. Furthermore, the talk will examine the potential role cultural heritage organizations can play within a city to engage a local audience in common experiences in a manner that can begin to address the social frictions and disparities that exist among the world’s major cities.

A presentation to the 2014 Communicating the Museum conference in Sydney, Australia. As our society becomes increasingly more intertwined, it is evident that global trends that once seemed remote are having a deep impact on our local communities. These same trends play out in museums around the globe as we reflect our communities both past and present. The museum audience is inherently submerged in this current of cultural change. Without pretending to predict the entire future, there are strong signals that a few important global trends will persist. What are those trends and how can museums begin to take advantage of those likely shifts to promote, advocate, and enhance their relevance to a global audience?

Is it possible to design a platform that can collect information about cultural participation of Museums? How might we design a tool that can help inform our Museum staff about the experiences and cultural consumption of visitors in the Museum. Rather than purely counting attendance as the best measure of Museum success, how might we move towards a behavioral analysis of visitor participation and how might this change museum practice?

Global Cities are growing at an amazing place and are changing the ways in which we live, work, play, and relate to each other. The term Smart Cities describes a movement to apply new technological developments towards the development of these cities, but does doing so create a city that we actually want to live in? This presentation will address the role of culture and artists in creating a dynamic "place" and the role that Museums might play in promoting a cultural dialog within their local communities

Organisational success today depends on effective communication and collaboration with individuals from cultures with varying beliefs and practices. Indeed, with the workforce increasingly comprised of people of varying cultural backgrounds, leaders must now prioritise the significance of cultural competence in the workplace. Ensuring cultural competence at every level of your organisation cannot be understated. While cultural disparities can manifest in different ways, as a leader, you must build deep and nuanced cultural competence skills and education to accurately spot, address and alleviate the various scenarios that can arise. Failing to recognise the importance of cultural competence or not acting to improve it can lead to cultural negligence. There are a few things to consider to ensure your organisation is on the right track. In this deck, you'll understand the importance of building cultural competence in the workplace. You'll also learn • The three (3) dimensions of Cultural Competence in the workplace • Key strategies to build a culturally competent workforce • Major benefits you stand to gain by having a culturally competent team.

Insurance IoT is a social good! Because: 🔵 Expected losses can be reduced structured programs with both real-time mitigation actions to solve a specific situation, and behavioral change mechanisms to promote safer behaviors (both in personal and commercial lines) 🔵 Rate can be matched to risks better: - Smaller and more accurate pricing clusters allow a large part of profiles to receive a lower rate - Even with the ability to price the individual probability of loss (cluster of one) the insurance foundation isn’t canceled (The risk of each policy will contribute to the expected losses of the portfolio; The premiums paid by many lucky policyholders will be used to pay the claims of the few unlucky policyholders who had an accident in a period of coverage) 🔵 IoT data can be used to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the claim process, so improving the combined ratio ceteris paribus ⏩ Large part of the policyholders will pay less (and portfolios currently difficult to insure will become more insurable) Insurance IoT (and telematics) is not about providing a discount Insurance IoT (and telematics) is about creating economic value using the data and sharing part of this value with policyholders (and agents & brokers) An integrated holistic adoption of the IoT paradigm is a game changer for your insurance business and a social good: ◾ it allows to improve the availability and affordability of insurance coverages ◾while allowing the sector to write a profitable business Below you can enjoy a selection of best practices in both personal and commercial lines - written with some of the IoT Insurance Observatory members - that have already started to obtain results from their IoT business transformation journeys
