Bridging the Digital Divide: New Media training strategies for language tutors By Benoît Guilbaud “Languages for the 21st century: Training, impact and influence” The Edge, University of Sheffield 1-2 September 2010 New technologies and Media Literacy are increasingly proving a prevalent aspect of every discipline and profession. Yet, discrepancies in their implementation and development are everywhere to be seen. In this paper, I propose to focus on specific strategies aiming at mending the existing gap between the ever-advancing learning technologies and the way they are really put into practice in language teaching in British Higher Education. The development of new media literacy in language teaching faces a number of challenges and obstacles. I shall focus on one of the major obstacles which I have come across as a classroom practitioner: the disparities in accessing, understanding and using new technologies among both staff and students. The problem originates from a variety of sources: generational gap, social diversity, lack of financial or technical support, all recognised in Warschauer’s gradation-based redefined concept of digital divide (2002). Focusing on academic and technical staff training, several solutions can be thought of in order to easily and affordably implement some of the latest recommendations made by the New Media Consortium’s Horizon Project in the Horizon Report 2010. These solutions will address the problems of workload distribution, human and financial resources allocation with a particular focus on balancing the ratio between hardware, software and human investments, as well as raising awareness of the importance of new media and its impact on independent learning personal development and employability. These strategies are designed with quantifiable objectives in mind. They can rationalise costs and prevent technological resources from being misused or unused, thereby losing a large proportion of their economical value over time. They can also enhance learner autonomy and student employability, which are two measurable factors.

Paper presentation at the Interactive Computer aided Learning conference (ICL 2001), Villach, Austria, September 2001. This paper presents an initial analysis of the duration and effort data collected during the migration of WinEcon, a large-scale CAL package to WWW-based delivery. The paper reviews the data collected during the initial development of WinEcon before presenting the preliminary data collected during the recent migration. The data presented represents a snapshot of the data collection process towards the end of the migration project including an overview of the raw project data in terms of cost, duration and effort. Initial lessons learned from the project will be presented along with the potentially controversial view that conversion of large-scale projects, while feasible, may not represent the most efficient use of resources. The authors will argue that in many cases it may be more efficient to start again rather than migrate and reuse exiting tools and technology.

This presentation reflects on recent developments in the adoption of technology enhanced learning (TEL) tools within the UK higher education sector - in particular the rise of student-controlled and creative technologies to promote information, knowledge-sharing and networking in learning and teaching activities. Current generations of students are now arriving on campus with the expectation that their technologies will seamlessly interconnect with university services and support a flexible and personalised learning experience - engaging them in collaborative knowledge creation activities and developing their learning as producers of ‘content’ (Generation ‘C’). Drawing on the most recent sector-wide research (Jisc, 2017; UCISA 2018), this paper discusses the impact of these technological developments on academic practice – specifically the scope that learning technologies now present for innovation in the delivery of the taught curriculum.

Digital literacy is essential in writing research articles for publication in today's digital age, particularly for novice english as a foreign language (EFL) teacher trying to publish their research articles. This qualitative research explores the digital literacy practices of novice EFL teachers in writing research articles for publication, including the digital tools they use, their purposes for using these tools, and the challenges they face in using them. The data were collected using a questionnaire and interview. The study found that novice EFL teachers conceptualized digital literacy as the ability to search and evaluate credible online sources, using word processing and digital editing tools, collaborating online, and publishing their work digitally. Novice EFL teachers use various digital tools, such as word processing software, reference management software, and online academic databases, to improve their research and writing process. They use these tools for various purposes, such as collaborating with peers, improving their writing skills, and publishing their work online. However, novice EFL teachers face limited technical issues, limited access, inadequate technology infrastructure, and time management. It is recommended that academic institutions provide support to help novice EFL teachers develop their digital literacy skills, including technical support services, and training programs.

This paper summarises recent findings from UCISA case study and survey research on the pace of change in the institutional adoption of technology enhanced learning tools across the UK higher education sector, and will address the rise of student-controlled and creative technologies to promote information, knowledge-sharing and networking in learning and teaching activities. Current generations of students are now arriving on campus with the expectation that their technologies will seamlessly interconnect with university services and support their learning experience. The paper discusses the impact these technological developments are having on the delivery of campus-based courses – specifically the scope that learning technologies now present for innovation in the delivery of the taught curriculum. Through a presentation of case examples from the University of York we consider how the affordances of mobile and online learning technologies are being applied to support active learning opportunities for students.

Recently published guidance for disabled students itemises a range of technology based "reasonable adjustments" they should expect to find in any post 16 learning provider. These expectations are based on advice and guidance that has been available to the sector for more than 6 years so learning providers claiming they didn't know wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

The use of an electronic ILP (e-ILP) has a number of advantages for Colleges that are on split sites, or for programmes where the students cross a number of organisational and curriculum boundaries e.g. A Levels. The e-ILP is held centrally and viewed locally. These are screen shots from a system being developed at Peterborough.

Progress in understanding the molecular basis of primary neurulation has occurred on two fronts: neural induction and shaping and bending of the neural plate. In regard to the former, the neural plate is now known to be the default state of the ectoderm, and induction of the neural plate actually involves suppressing the formation of the epidermal ectoderm (neural induction is not considered further herein). In regard to shaping and bending of the neural plate, about 100 mutations in the mouse have been identified that result in defective shaping and/or bending and, consequently, result in neural tube defects (NTDs); thus, these mutations provide insight into which genes are involved in both normal and abnormal neurulation. Because these form-shaping events of neurulation are driven by changes in cell behavior, as discussed earlier, it is not surprising that mutation of cytoskeletal, extracellular matrix/cell adhesion, cell cycle, and cell death genes results in NTDs. Neurulation is a highly choreographed morphogenetic series of events that must be precisely timed and coordinated across multiple tissues. This presumably involves signaling among tissues. It is the hope of studies using mouse mutations that such signaling pathways will be identified, ultimately leading to an understanding of the molecular basis of neurulation and the formation of NTDs in both animal models and ultimately in humans. In the following sections, we discuss what has been learned about the molecular basis of shaping and bending of the neural plate.Embryology Neurulation is the critical morphogenetic event occurring during the fourth week of human gestation, converting the previously developed neural plate into the ectoderm covered neural tube that will eventually differentiate into the brain and spinal cord. Genetic regulation of the events involved in mammalian neural tube morphogenesis is a complicated process that involves a multitude of genes. These genes have vital functions in a range of biological activities that are thought to include signaling molecules, transcription proteins and factors, cytoskeletal and gap junction proteins, growth factors, and tumor suppressor genes (Copp et al., 2003; Ewart et al., 1997; Sah et al., 1995; Zhang et al., 1996). The neural tube, formed by the cell shape changes and movements, ultimately fuses at several discrete points.Neurulation (or primary neurulation) starts in the fourth week of gestation and is the process that leads to the formation of the neural tube from the neural plate, the rudiment of the CNS [34]. It encompasses four essential and overlapping events: (1) neural induction, (2) shaping, (3) bending of the neural plate, and (4) closure of the neural tube. Neural induction (1) is the process of neural plate formation, that is, the beginning of the development of the CNS. It occurs during gastrulation starting on day 18. As described earlier, cells of the ectoderm differentiate into the neuroectoderm, a pseudostratif.
