3. (2) Initial Incisions
1. Lie rat on its back.
2. Press down on limbs to open up chest + belly.
3. Make 2 horizontal incisions:
- (1) Directly below throat
- (1) Directly above crotch
4. Make 1 vertical incision:
- From throat ๏ crotch
- Pull up on skin + muscle to avoid cutting internal
organs.

5. (3) Organs In The Chest Cavity
โข Ribs:
Bones covering heart and lungs.
โข Heart:
Looks like red-brown nugget in center of chest.
โข Lungs:
โ Look like brown lobes/flaps.
โ 1 Lung on either side of heart.
โข Diaphragm:
โ Looks like a thin, smooth piece of muscle.
โ Directly under ribcage.
6. (4) Organs In The Abdomen
โข Liver:
โ Largest internal organ.
โ On ratโs right side / On your left side.
โ Large, hard, brown, lobed organ.
โ Directly underneath diaphragm.
โข Stomach:
โ On ratโs left side / On your right side.
โ J-Shaped, squishy sac.
โ Directly underneath diaphragm.
โข Small Intestine:
โ Flesh colored, squiggly tube.
โ Small = Thin in diameter.
โ Middle of abdomen, connecting to stomach.
โข Large Intestine:
โ Flesh colored, squiggly tube.
โ Large = Thick in diameter.
โ Middle of abdomen, connecting to anus.
7. (5) Organs Along The Back
โข Kidneys:
โ Look like kidney beans.
โ Red-brown color.
โ Must remove all other digestive organs first.
โ Lie along lower back, 1 on each side.
10. (6) Basic Organ Function
โข Heart: Pump blood + circulate nutrients.
โข Lungs: Bring in oxygen + expel carbon dioxide.
โข Diaphragm: Help lungs fill with air.
โข Stomach: Metabolize food.
โข Small Intestines: Absorb nutrients from food.
โข Large Intestine: Expel food waste.
โข Liver: Break down bad blood cells + toxins.
โข Kidneys: Filter blood.
