The App Launcher allows navigating to Office 365 and SharePoint Online from SharePoint Server and vice-versa

7. Personal File Storage
OneDrive for Business is the personal file storage in Office 365 for SharePoint Server in hybrid configuration. User can
also share and synchronize files to your local computer. Without hybrid configuration, personal file storage is in the My
Sites document library.

“Hybrid Sites” is a unified experience in navigating to SharePoint on-premises and online sites based on recent,
recommended/suggested, followed and configured links. Hybrid sites should not be confused with content
synchronized between on-premises and online sites.

Inconsistency in the App Launcher with Site app tile
and SharePoint app tile.
These tiles go to different pages but have similar purposes. As of July 9, 2016, my guess would be that SharePoint
Server would eventually update the on-premises App Launcher with the SharePoint tile to be consistent with Office
365 App Launcher.

The cloud hybrid search is a unified search experience where the user sees both on-premises and online content in
the same search result set. This is because there is one centralized search index located in the Office 365 tenant.
The cloud federated search relies on queries to external search indexes and the search results are partitioned as
opposed to unified.
General recommendation is to go with the newer cloud hybrid search.

rather providing a unified user experience in navigating to

 Hybrid strategies support both environments or a phased

and Azure services.
