5. The Qing Dynasty is mostly remembered for its usurpation by Western powers. It ran from 1662-1911. In the early 1700’s, Emperor Qianlong strictly rejected Britain’s request for trade, but soon after the Europeans began to influence China’s art, writing, and culture. The Europeans peacefully settled in China until they were outlawed by the Chinese for stealing. With no other option to turn to, Britain gave China opium, so it’d stimulate a drug addiction, which pushed China to open for trade. The opium trade blew out of proportion when China lost All their silver. The Chinese government began to inflict laws that stated that whomever was caught using or selling opium will receive a death penalty. By 1939, China’s anger lashed out when it bombed a British ship of opium. Britain finally negotiated the first “unequal treaty” called the Nanjing Treaty. It gave Britain the port of Hong Kong. China also agreed to pay compensations for all damages. Soon after, China’s trade was controlled by foreign nations: Burma, Nepal, Japan, the United States, etc. The Qing dynasty was the first dynasty to be overridden and ruled by a foreign country. Nonetheless, this ancient dynasty is still remembered until this day for its unique culture and ancient past. Soo. . .Why was the Qing dynastyimportant?
