Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution had disastrous consequences for China. During the Great Leap Forward, the Chinese Communist Party forced people to exaggerate production amounts and give up their possessions, leading to a widespread famine. Zedong later formed the Red Guards group to eliminate opponents during the Cultural Revolution, and they attacked elders and intellectuals. Zedong's wife Jiang Qing established the Gang of Four but was later arrested for plotting against the state.
